I had a 2004 Cayenne S before my E70 and here are some of the areas the BMW outshines the Porsche IMO.

In my order of preference.

1. Interior; the porsche is an ergonomic nightmare.

2. Maintenance; be prepared to shell out some serious cash to keep the pepper healthy.

3. looks; That one is obvious although the GTS looks pretty good.

I had E53 X5 4.4i and 955 Cayenne S and now I own this E70 3.0si. Honestly speaking, I love the Cayenne much more than the X5 simply because the Cayenne handles better and looks better (not saying that the X5 is ugly)

It is just not realistic to buy a Cayenne here because V6 Cayenne (170k USD), Cayenne S (220k USD), Cayenne GTS (270k USD) and Cayenne Turbo (320k+ USD)

A wise idea was to purchase the X5 3.0si for 140k USD

If I could turn back time I would have purchased the Cayenne

Looks wise, I personally like both the E53 and the E70 bodies more than the Cayenne.

Performance-wise, even the top 4.8 E53 and the 4.8 E70 cannot compete once you go above a Cayenne S. Both the Cayenne Turbo and the Turbo S will blow any X5 out of the water. We're talking 0 to 100 km/hr in 5 seconds flat for the Cayenne Turbo, and even faster for the Turbo S. So there's really no comparison there. The top Cayenne "owns" the top X5.

But then we're also talking mega bucks for the Turbo (over $100 K) . So in terms of bang for buck, I think the X5 (V-8 models) wins out.

True, but both the ML63 and Jeep SRT8 are faster than all Cayennes. In the end for me, the X5 4.8 was the best balance because I actually have to drive mine on snow and mountain roads. Having an SUV that runs the 1/4 in 13 seconds sounds great until there's snow on the ground.

Like other posters, when I wanted to change my E53 for an E70, I looked at plenty of others, Range Rover, VW, Audi etc... but I have to say I never even bothered going to a Porsche showroom, I had no intention of being seen in a Cayenne, even though the Turbo S has the power I liked, I just couldnt do it/drive it, its a terrible looking car, porche are obsessed with branding everything to look like a 911, which in its self, has hardly changed in 30 years .. GET OVER IT Porsche designers.... make a new shape

I drove the Cayenne S prior to buying the 08 4.8. Need i say more?? By the way you are the first person I have ever heard say the Cayenne was better looking than the X-5. Do you feel in the minority?? Ha!

I was in this boat just a month ago. I chose E70 4.8i because I don't need off-road capabilities of a Cayenne, plus, if you equip an X5 and a Cayenne to similar option specs, for the price of base 3.6l Cayenne you will be able to get a 4.8i X5. Add the 0.9% offer on top of that and it becomes a no-brainer.

Other than the Turbo being out of my price range, and I really couldn't justify buying a Porsche without performance.... The interior turned me off.

The X5 was more suitable for myself, my girlfriend, and future kiddos.

I looked at the Porsche and ended up with a Tourareg due to the interior and price. I feel that the interior of the Porsche is dated and cold. Additionally the price is high compared to the Treg, WHICH is literally the same exact car.

Their very reliable, my Treg has been MUCH more reliable then either X5 ever was. The seats are much better designed and I get more mpg then my old X5 ever did.
