Maybe other manufacturer's cameras are more sensitive to light(i dunno) or they just have brighter taillights or have them closer to the camera to light up the way better.

anyway, yeah BMW's been getting away with it for quite a while now
It has to be the camera.

The camera on my son's baby monitor is much better than BMW's. I can clearly view my son from the monitor with just a tiny night light in his dark room.

I haven't seen the newer ones in Lexus or MB, but I'm actually pretty happy with the one on the X5. For my purposes, it does just fine and compares to friends' Lexus RX or LX from a couple of yrs ago. I don't really need it anyway and just see it as a fun gadget, and I definitely don't need HD quality picture, but the camera combined with the parking sensors makes backing up very easy.

It's fine in the daytime where you can make out all objects... it doesn't necessarily have to be high-def (even though other manu's offer close to it). But at night, it is sometimes impossible to make out shapes. Bottom line is you can't trust it enough at night to even consider the "do not rely solely on camera" warning because you couldn't if you tried.

That coupled with the delayed timing when turning on, it's pretty useless. I'm already 5-10 seconds out of my parking spot before it switches on. Impractical for everyday use. I paid good money to get the tech package despite all the reviews prior... in hopes of a simple retrofit replacement someday.
