Doesn't that annoy sales people and possibly give you worse deal than might've otherwise been possible? I want to be able to test drive like 3 times but don't want to bother and piss them off...

if interior noise is your issue, then I suggest the audi or Lexus SUVs. Audi interior and trim quality is quite high and you should give the their Q7 a try.

BMW seemed to have focused more on sporty hums and the sporty feel rather than blocking out all of the noise.

OP, like I posted before, I noticed wind noise coming from side mirrors when I test drove the vehicle. But that still didn't stop me from purchasing one.

Nope. I split up the experience with 5 different dealers asking questions of everyone of them. One dealer kept asking me to come back any time. It was with that dealer that i test drove 3 different cars and he was very helpful in pointing out the features of each one. It was the very last dealer that i test drove one day and came back and ordered the X5 5 days later.

After doing so I knew exactly what to expect.

I think its a matter of luck too. Mine is making a lot of noise in the back and I have to take it back to the dealer. Others have other issues... But for sure the choise of the SD is the correct one. You will not regret it. I am so satisfied with everything else that i dont even care about the noise in the back. Especialy after the engine tuning i did with Hartge i have the feeling i am driving an M5!

Comparing a X5 to a GL isn't exactly apples to apples. I have both a E70 and a a brand new GL that is less than 3 weeks old. The GL is more like an escalade in terms of size, comfort, performance and technology. If you like the feeling of driving a Heavy SUV, then get GL. If you like the performance and feeling of a sedan but want to keep the utility of a SUV then go with the X5.

As for the noise differences from the interiors of both vehicles, the X5 sits you up closer to the window so that is why you probably why it could be noiser than in a GL but I can assure you that the difference is minimal.

Both are excellent vehicles that so far seem to maintain the quality of vehicles manufactured in Europe.

The thing I hate about the GL is the stupid shift lever which located on the steering column and is literally the size of a disposable cigarette lighter. Also when compared to the X5, the technology and user controls in the GL seem privative in comparison and closely resembles to those you would find in late model american vehicles.

you know, I agree, at around 100km or so (usual highway speeds) its really not bad but if you go faster, you definitely hear more noise. The X is probably not the quietest SUV around

I have an 8 year old E70 X5M and there is a bit of wind noise above 100km/hr from the door what it seems. The weather strips still look great and soft, but I am debating replacement just for the drivers door to sew id it will help. To replace both rubbers on the drivers door and body was quoted close to C$1,000 as part are about C$400
