Just to add to my prev post I was running 98RON fuel and set the cruise at 70 and did a none stop 226 miles lucky with only 1 small traffic jam, plus remember the USA gallon is less than the UK Gallon so the US readings will be lower. In the Uk the 2008 model gets a revised ECU for better mpg and lower CO2s (244 I think), so i expect this would be better for 2-3 mpg on top of mine which is the 2007 model and a CO2 of 260.

The tail pipe on the 2008 is clean - the 2007s always looked a diesel stack.
How do you guys calculate the exact mileage (lets say 12.66 MPG) per gallon?
Is this something other than what the mileage indicator says?

Thanks

You use a calculator. divide miles driven into gallons of gas you add to fill up the vehicle...

The best way is to use the trip calculator on your idrive. It's one of the navigation options. No need to use calculator.

To get an accurate reading on hwy miles, you need to start it while driving on the freeway not before getting on since an uphill climb will mess up the numbers. You can do the same thing for street driving.

It's pretty accurate and I use it a lot if I want to monitor my gas consumption and driving habits.

How do you reset the mpg calculator. It seems to be just a running total of when I bought the car and average gas consumption used since then.

you cannot reset the MPG display on the dash (at least I don't know how)

You need to go the Navigation section on your idrive and go to trip computer. you can reset it on every trip.

On the user manual, page 69 (2007 edition), it says:

"To reset average consumption: Press the BC button on the turn signal lever for approx. 2 seconds"

Is this normal? Does MPG get better? It is a brand new 2008 model which I have had for about 2 months now...

Love the SAV so far but this MPG is way worse than I anticipated!
I have 19.5 mpg (8.3 kM/L) averagely.

Got my X5 on 2007/09, now has 19000km (11806 mile).

Driving daily for work, highway and city. (Think about the rush hours.)

My best record was 29.635 mpg (12.6 KM/L) on a 150 mile (241 KM) non-stop, highway trip. I had strong tail wind
