bottom line is i think consumers definetly like fuel efficiency, bmw has done a little to that end, they probably end to do more especially with the redesigned x5 coming into the mist of the fuel prices 4-dollar spikes during its release.
I think the analyst is right but not that they should abondon the x5 ,but improve it to make it lighter, smaller, and even more fuel efficient and I think that would have definetly boosted sales. It came out in 07, ( late 06) , its now 09 so its already 3 years old design yet the fuel efficieny is only mariginally improvement over e53 which is over 9 years old ( 3x )
look at the new Q5 and cayenne , which are going in this direction for sure.
