Slow to respond iDrive when starting

Wondering if this is a common "feature". When I start my X5, it can take over a minute for everything to come on-line. I'll be driving down the road and trying to change to volume or radio station. The X5 won't respond for a while as it appears to be waking up. All is fine after a minute or so. Other functions in the car are slow to get going also.

That doesn't happen with my 08. I hit start, I hit accept on Idrive and the X is good to go.

It's slow on my 08 too, and annoying. This is in addition to the slow start up of the backup camera which is well known in this forum. Supposed to be fixed in the next generation system said to be coming in the 2010 MY.

It's slow, but not a full minute slow... maybe half that. Usually by the time I'm done reversing out of my driveway and a quarter block away it's all good (no engine warm up time)... which tells you how useless the backup camera is.

rH71, yes, it's about the same for me, but still annoying as I said before. Especially as the OP said when trying to switch radio stations and nothing happens. I'll be driving along punching the button until it kicks in - I guess I should be more patient .

Is it pretty much instant or does it still take a bit of time to load where you see the BMW logo for 15 secs and another 10 or so for rear camera? Trying to gauge if I should be looking forward to the next upgrade (I know I should be regardless).

bigx5er, I just had my car re-programmed last Monday. I took delivery on January 29, 2008, and the programming apparently involved 19 separate modules. At least, that is what is included on my service invoice (although the re-programming was done at no charge under warranty). The re-programming took six hours! From the Technician's description, the battery charger they were using failed during the re-programming, and some of it had to be done over again. That might have extended the time somewhat.

All of this was related to the installation of a trailer hitch and the required programming of the trailer control module. All of the other programming has to be brought up to date when that is done.

If anyone has any idea what all of these cryptic codes (CAS, JBE, GW, DME/DDE, EGS, etc.) mean, I would be happy to post the new part No. given for each program control module.

Maybe as a summary, this might help: My "Vehicle data status" was E070-07-09-520, and the "Target data status" was E070-08-09-530. Those numbers sound suspiciously like dates and revision levels. Does anyone on the board know for sure?

Jim M.

A minute does sound a little long, but yes, it is very annoying how long it takes to respond. And once again reminds me why I don't use the useless back up camera. Unfortunately PDC is also slow to respond.
