I have the 450 Crossroad, not the 450R. With mine I used the recommended size for the E53, and they fit fine, not sticking out too much. If they had stuck out, I could easily cut them with a hacksaw, as the end caps just slip on and off. Not sure if the 450R is the same, but you could check fairly easily with the Thule dealer.

For you snowboarders...how do you load your boards, upright or upside down? I used to load mine upright but the wind-noise got annoying and not sure if it causes wind drag. I've been loading boards upside down lately and it's cut wind-noise significantly.

I load mine upside down too. It cut wind-noise and I figure it cuts wind resistance too. I load ski's that way too.

I have a Yakima setup. Needed to move the Rocketbox from a minivan (now gone) to the new 2009 X5. Yakima fitment guide says to use 58" bars. I had Yakima 48" bars and Yakima Rail Riders (and it was midnight). The back fit fine with about 4" sticking out past the supports. The front was *flush* with the Rail Rider. There was nothing to spare - not even enough to put on the bar end caps. If you pay attention to the fit, it's safe. But, it would be easy to have it unsafe. After that trip, I ordered one 58" bar from www.orsracksdirect.com. I will cut it down to have the overhang match the back overhang.
