He is working in 5 series development, so maybe his information is not 100% accurate.

He is correct. LCI X5 is getting same diesel engine from the new 740d. BMW changed their mind and X5 will not be the first to get tri-turbo diesel.

three turbos sounds stupid to me. BMW could easily up the boost or change compressor wheels to get more power without having to add the complication and cost of a 3rd turbo.

Is the twin-turbo 6-cylinder engine still a possibility for the 2011 X5? I've been holding off my order until I hear, but I'd also like to take advantage of the current incentives on 2010 models.

The chances of TT6 making it into new X5 is much higher than TTV8 considering the regular 3.0 X5 is the one that is in desperate need of more power not the V8

The current 4.8 V8 is becoming obsolete in the BMW line-up--'11 5 Series is getting the TTV8--and dropping the 4.8 V8. It doesn't make economical sense for BMW to keep the 4.8 engine just so it can be in the X5 line-up of engines.

BMW is eventually moving to all TT engines in their product line-up. So, the LCI X5s will get TT engines. Expect to see four cyl TT engines as well this year, not in X5 though.

TT is the way to go... if its already in the X6... makes sense for X5 to get to help reduce plant complexity.

I understand that, what I was trying to say that need for transformation is much more acute in case of 3.0 engine, not suggesting the 4.8 does not need to be replaced.

This isn't only about power. Car manufacturers need to find ways to keep or even improve power figures but at the same time they need to lower emissions and fuel consumption. Not an easy task if you ask me.
This can be done only with innovative technology and the tri-turbo is one of those technologies.
