Why not wait for the 4.0i twin turbo six cylinder engine that has been announced for the new 740i? It has more hp than the 3.5i. We don't know when or if it will get to the X5 any more than we know about the 3.5tt, but as long as we are wishing and hoping, let's get the latest version.

after a x5 4.4i and a 545i touring i am a bit fed up with fuel consumption so the 3.5i would have fit very well

They are all the same engine, just with different hp ratings. 3.0 litre, twin turbo, 306 or 326 or ?? hp.

My understanding is that BMW is trying to keep a clear delineation between the X5 and the X6 -- with the X6 obviously being the sportier of the two. If that's true (and it makes sense), don't expect the X5 to get the bi-turbo engines. That is, of course, unless you're talking about an X5 M.

The 4.0 litre sold in previous generation 5 and 7 series models was a naturally aspirated 8 cylinder. The 35 in the X6 is a twin turbo inline 6, 3.0 litres The 50 in the X6 is a twin turbo eight, 4.4 litres The 40 in the new 7 series is a twin turbo inline 6, 3.0 litres, rated about 20 hp higer than the 35 model. That is the rating that I think should come across to the X5 and X6.
