Engine oil at minimum level

A engine oil at minimum level warning light shown this morning. It just reached 5k miles. Is it normal?

It is very common. Using one quart in 5000 miles is typical oil consumption. Easiest thing is to just add a quart of oil, but you can go by your dealer since you are in the US and they will add it for you.

...with JCL. The part I don't know is the oil level sensor warning
in the new E70s: if it comes "on" with 1 or 2, or more qts "down".

But, a qt or 2, in the first 5,000 miles is fairly typical in these engines.
Some owners will see very little oil consumption, others will see your
rate of consumption. And, your dlr will point that out, when you get your
freebie top off.

If there are no obvious leaks, drips, smoking tail pipe, I would not
worry, but watch consumption over the next 5K miles.

That happened to me too. I just went to the dealer and they topped it off right at the dealer's driveway. There is no need to setup a service appointment for that (however, dealers vary).

I don't have an E70, but in my E60 (535i) the light comes on when it is one quart down. It took just over 8000 km from new, and one litre brought it back to full. Consumption dropped slightly since then, and I find that it stays in the top half of the range (up to 500 ml down) for quite a while, then goes more quickly to the 'add oil' level, pretty much like a fuel gauge that is slow to move on the top half of the tank, but moves more quickly on the bottom half.

I don't think that level of oil consumption is anything to worry about, personally.

if you'd keep your foot out of it you'd see the consumption drop a little!

What fun would that be... A quart of oil is a small price to pay for my happiness
