Sat Nav DVD read/drive problems

Hi all,
I have been using sat nav everyday since I have the car - almost a year now. For past couple of months the availability of the DVD drive to read the disc is getting worse and worse.... sometimes it does not read at all. I get message: DVD error.......

I've tried different brands of DVD discs, it is fine for a day and than it progressively gets worse and worse... it is almost like the disc is being worn or something.....day by day... basicaly any new discs is being read max 1 week and than the drive won't read it at all....so I have to make new copy....

I must say I'm using DVD copy.... as my car is second had and I never had the original disc..... but as I said it worked fine for many months without a glitch...... any ideas?? Anyone tried to use the DVD cleaning discs maybe??

If your drive isn't defective, and it seems less likely since it works for a week straight without issue, then I think it's just being very sensitive with the disc. I tried a copy of a disc and it would randomly fail to read it. I popped my original back in and it never has that issue (the newer navteq version still has improper routes sometimes so it wasn't worth the headaches). You may need to get an original disc from the dealer for $. But if you're going to spend the money, make them check the drive for free under warranty first.

Well, maybe others who used burned discs can tell you what works flawlessly for them... I'll have to see what mine was...

Something else you can try to check for a defective drive, is to pop in an authentic movie dvd vs. burned content and see if it has trouble.
