One point of comparison may be with your 335i. With the S2, etc. you may be worse than my stock 335i, but it could be a decent baseline. I've averaged just under 23 MPG over almost four years, and figured the X5 35d would do as well or better. |

I'm surprised that the diesel is only seeing around 21MPG. I have a 3.0 gas X5 and I'm averaging 21mpg on my commute and that includes crossing the Tappan Zee 2x a day. 120 miles roundtrip, GSP>Tap>Merrit. And I agree with the other poster, the engine is getting looser as it gets older, I have ~ 14k on the clock now and the MPG's are getting better.

I've updated my previous post (post #30 in the thread) with more stats. Check them out - http://www.xoutpost.com/747453-post30.html.
**Added MPG per refill, and over the life of the vehicle: Avg Consumption: 22.02mpg Avg price/gallon: 2.80 Avg price/mile: 0.13 Overall fuel cost: 886.30 Avg miles/day: 35.01 ~~~ I get about 15mpg (based on car computer) in my 535i with Dinan software/exhaust and a very heavy lead foot (I drive very hard in the 5er).

Couple of screenshots from the app on my phone I use to track stats (MileageMeter for Blackberry). The 4 spikes from December to April are my 4 trips up to the mountains - from 5280 elevation (seriously, my house sits at 5280!) to over 11,000 ft at the Eisenhower Tunnel. The car goes up the mountain effortlessly, and down the mountain I'm hardly using any fuel!

Awesome data presentation jaax3.
Mine gives around the same(22) for the same 60/40 - city/highway driving. |

I'm very surprised to see you guys with diesels getting such low mileage. Where's the 19/26 that BMW claims?

I had 11,000 on mine before I traded it in last week. Around town, I was getting 22.5 - 24.2 MPG which I considered to be solid (70 highway/30 city). It really depended on the mix and weather. My measurements were by fuel added each time.
On trips it was just OK, mainly due to my speed. At 80 - 85 I was getting 24 and change. To get 26 requires you drive 70 and under. |

If we assume that the BMW 19/26 city/highway mpg claim is 100% accurate. And your driving mix is 50% City and 50% Highway the AVERAGE would only be 22.5 mpg. At 30/70 it climbs to 23.9 mpg At 25/75 its 24.25 mpg And even at 10/90 its still only 25.3 IOW it would be nearly impossible to get much better than a long term average of 25.3 mpg, unless a 35d was used almost exclusively for road trips. Even then you have to stop for diesel every 500 miles or so. And some wusses even stop for food, lodging, etc. even though it reduces their avg mpg ![]() I'll post an updated graph RSN that show that my long term average mpg is still getting better, even though we're still regularly using the 35d for towing. ![]() Funf Dreisig Last edited by FunfDreisig; 06-10-2010 at 08:19 PM. |

I drive city, short trips. Using 16 litres per 100 km. BMW says should be around 11. It's BS. On long German autobahns maybe the promised 8.8 is real, but not in my world.

Here is the up-to-date mpg graph for our 2009 35d. Information on how I produce this graph is in my prior posts in this thread.
The interesting point is that our long term average mpg continues to improve ![]() ![]() Funf Dreisig |
