Each cover is $30 but I think the superior protection justifies the higher price.

Cutting at the 6 o'clock position was a great suggestion. I have included pictures below. Just a few notes:

1) Cutting through the fabric is straightforward and can be done with scissors.

2) On the passenger seat, I cut through the metal grommet with some wire cutters. I do not recommend this since, in addition to being cut, the grommet was kind of squashed so it wasn't a clean cut. There was also a sharp point that I had to file. On the driver seat, I used a jig saw and the results were better.

3) This might seem obvious, but when using the jig saw, you should make the cut with the restraining tab upside down. I cut the right tab right side up so you might notice that the jig saw scratched the black paint on the grommet.

I will make a few more adjustments to straighten everything out but am generally satisfied with the results. We keep the headrests fairly close to the fully down position so the grommets are not really visible. I will say that you do need the tabs installed. Without the tabs, the seat protector will fall off with a few good kicks.

I just bought these for my X5. They are truly the best on the market. The fitment is perfect too.
