gotta question about a noise

I have an easy question for ya'll: I always notice a funny "clicking" sound coming from the engine and it accelerates when I accelerate. I only notice the sound whenever it's cold out. I first noticed the sound in Germany and I asked a mechanic at the dealership and he said it was nothing to worry about and he explained to me why it was making that noise. The noise does go away whenever the car warms up. Can ya'll tell me why it is doing that? I can't remember!!!
