Oil Analysis Report - Castrol EDGE 0W-40

As I'm approaching 100k miles, I was curious how things were looking inside my engine. I ordered an oil analysis report for my last oil change, which was a 5,000 mile run of Castrol EDGE 0W-40.

This is my daily driver and is driven 90% city (short trips) and 10% highway. The oil appears to be unphased and could certainly go longer than 5,000 miles. Overall, I'm satisfied considering this is the cheapest readily available LL-01 approved oil out there. I'd go as far to say it's the best "euro" (LL-01, A40, 229.5) oil available.

Good to know, and thanks for posting your results! I was going to use LiquiMoli since that's what I use in my E36 but a member here (maybe you) recommended Castrol Edge. Good to know it looks good after 5k.

You added 2.5 qts in 5,000 miles?
So does the oil test good because you keep replenishing the additives?

Yeah I lose about a quart every 2,000 miles through the valve stem seals. Certainly adding oil makes the test look a bit better. But regardless, the wear-metals are very low which is nice to see.

'08 4.8i with 145k. Adding a quart every 4-5k. Guess I should consider myself lucky.

The risk with “wet engines” that burn a quart every 2k is carbon build up leading to pre-detonation and possible engine damage.

Our 2001 X5 4.8i consumed something like 1qt/2k. Unless we drove her pretty hard, she would develop a stutter at high RPM. The dealer offered to pull/clean the heads (at my expense). But he also suggested that I could “blow it out” with some spirited high rev runs in the country. I opted for the latter

At the time I was regularly hauling a utility trailer of stuff to the cabin I was building. So on these runs I’d drop her down to sport and hold her into a lower gear as I accelerated up hill with a fully loaded trailer. After blowing her out in 2nd, I’d work my way up the gears on the next hill untill she didn’t stutter in 5th at 6,000 rpm. Of course, blowing her out in 5th required a close watch for cars with those special logos/lights.

I run a bottle of Redline SI-1 every 5k miles to help with carbon buildup. I do notice pre-detonation when it’s warmer outside. Maybe I’ll give your Italian tune-up method a try
