The X was a champ in the snow

Our first snow storm this year is the biggest for quite some time and lucky for me I have the X for this one.

There is a 45 degree incline hill on a major road to get home and several cars were stuck including a few SUV and minivans.

The X saw the road completely blocked, turned to me, gave me a wink and took control. She hopped the curb, drove over a mound of snow and immediately punched the gas and passed a procession of other vehicles. She immediately raced up the incline and gave a salute to the cars below.

That feeling alone was worth the price of the X. I patted her on the dashboard for a job well done.

sounds like fun, winter tires? I'm itching to try my staggered 20s (all-season) tomorrow. Last year I had only tried a few inches. If it can handle a foot, then I'll know for sure it can do pretty much anything.

Kinda scared that I can't control other cars on the road though.

Are you sure you were in a X, or Herby the Love Bug?

Nice Job

What tires are you running? My 02 X5 without X Drive would get stuck in deep snow in the driveway where my Grand Cherokee churned right through. I expect much better with the 04 X Drive I have now. I am in the Buckeye Nation so I'll have plenty of opportunity to find out.

I actually went out and bought new tires but wanted to test the stocks to see what they can handle so I still have the stock Bridgestone Duelers on with less than 6 thousand miles of wear. No problems at all on a 45 degree incline with about 8 inches of snow unshoveled. It didn't even slip much going about 35-45 mph. I think the DSC light flashed maybe twice for a second. I will say the snow was powdery and I don't think the ground was icy.

I am now not sure if I really need to change the tires other than if the duelers have some considerable wear on them.

Because three is greater than one. They could have provided winter tires (good for one season) at the expense of the other three seasons. BMW expects, as do other manufacturers, that owners will purchase winter tires for winter conditions. AWD is no substitute for appropriate tires.
