I think its much less about the wheels and much more about the tires. Summer tires, no matter what size/width and useless in the snow. Any sort of winter tire will be night and day different for traction in any slippery conditions.

I used to run a dedicated set of summer and winter tire/wheels on my Audis. With summer tires and snow (and quattro) - forget it, slipping and sliding everywhere. I would switch to the exact same wheels with dedicated winter tires, and the car could nearly climb trees. Truly an amazing difference.

For the record my 20s with summer tyres were lethal, I was quite shocked at how bad the tyres were compared to my old E53 with 20" Diamaris on. With 19s and Vredestein wintrac 4s on the E70 was very good.
