I think its much less about the wheels and much more about the tires. Summer tires, no matter what size/width and useless in the snow. Any sort of winter tire will be night and day different for traction in any slippery conditions.
I used to run a dedicated set of summer and winter tire/wheels on my Audis. With summer tires and snow (and quattro) - forget it, slipping and sliding everywhere. I would switch to the exact same wheels with dedicated winter tires, and the car could nearly climb trees. Truly an amazing difference.
