Opinions: X35d Lag

It definitely lags. With this vehicle I no longer pull out in front of traffic and gun it. I give myself a lot more time. Putting the tranny in DS mode does help some.

One of the most annoying things is taking a corner and hitting the gas mid-corner to accelerate through the turn. Just can't do it. Tranny is always in granny gear. I hit the gas, nothing happens for a second, then it starts to accelerate.

Agreed. I too have noticed a slight lag and if I anticipate a situation where i need quick response, I just switch to sport mode and the lag is gone. The interesting thing about the sport mode is that you can actually achieve higher MPG using it if you choose your gears wisely and avoid hard acceleration. Not sure if this kind of experimentation might cause a transmission problem.

There is a definite lag from dead stop but have adjusted my driving habits now that I have experienced it and on the whole I love the 35d. Like another poster said the acceleration from 60 to 80/100 mph is very smooth and I liken it to my 540i which has a V8.

I noticed that the lag is not so bad if you have auto hold on. I love the diesel on the whole.

Had BMW NA call me re this item on my survey as it has become a safety issue.

There is no excuse for it.

Some of you appear to be confusing ignition retardation via the Traction Control System (TCS) and other onboard stability systems for Turbo-Lag.

When making a sharp right turn, from a stop, to pull out into traffic, the TCS may and stability control may retard the ignition to prevent the wheels from spinning.

Try turning it off. Traction will show on the display, indicating it's off.

Your complaints will be gone. Floor it, and the tires will spin, under the right circumstances.

The lag is FAR from dangerous. This vehicle accelerates from 0-60 in 6.2 seconds, and many reputable testers are getting numbers below that.

If that's a dangerous acceleration rate, you need to learn how to drive...

Diesels don't have an ignition system.

The concern isn't the 0-60 time, but the delay in throttle response from standstill or very low speed. It becomes dangerous in situations where an immediate response is needed such as making a left turn ahead of oncoming traffic. I had the same issue with my E60 M5 (SMG III) which is one of the primary reasons I sold it. That car was just a wee bit quicker to 60 than the 35d.

Aren't we talking about turbo lag or lack thereof with the 35d? The E60 M5 is just typical of a high-performance n/a petrol engine ... it needs revs to give its best

I was just making the point that 0-60 time doesn't always accurately characterize a cars low speed acceleration. (BTW, The problem with the M5 was the transmission.) Also, I'm not sure that the lag is a result of turbo lag or gear selection.
