Ease of Changing Wheels

When I took delivery on my 35d, the dealer had already changed to the 20's.

I did keep the 18's though and am headed for a road trip to the mountains and wanted to put the 18s back on. I'd probably swap them back out as soon as I got back.

I've seen a lot of questions and discussion on the benefits of different tires, wheels, etc... but I haven't seen this one;

Is it as easy as jacking it up and swapping out the wheels?

It's not something I would be swapping out for an entire winter season, just for a week where I'll be likely to encounter winter conditions.

yup its that easy. Lots of people like to get a torque wrench to make sure the lugs are adjusted to the right tension. Check with your dealer to see what the tension should be set at.

Simple to do. Block the wheels, jack it up and swap. Reset your TPMS.

It's easy to do. Just remember that a wheel/tire combo is >75 lbs.

The torque settings for the X5 are 100 ft/lbs.

Actually you need 4 jacks... these BMWs require 'synchronized jacking'. You get one wheel too high and the AWD will kick off and never work right again. You'll need to replace the transmission, ECU and recalibrate every module.

Better to bring it to an Authorized BMW Sport Activity Center where highly trained technicians will take care of it for you.

I don't think this is correct. I've changed my wheels/tires twice now with a single jack without any issues.

If simultaneous jacking was required, you would never be able to change a flat tire and many of the maneuvers that they put these cars through off road in Spartansburg would set off the system.

I highly recommend getting a 1/2" Torque wrench if you do this. If you watch, Sears usually puts them on sale every once in a while.

While not necessary by any means, one of these tools is handy to align the wheel since BMWs use bolts, rather than studs and lug nuts:
