Transmission Issues Going Up Hills?

Hi all:

Just moved from Chicago to Seattle. Since arriving, I've noticed that my '08 X5 will not shift into the next gear when going up hills. (Didn't have this problem in Chicago since there are no hills)

Th X5 revs really loudly and then finally once the road becomes straight again, it shifts to the next gear.

I've decided to just shift manually when going up hills now because it's really annoying.

Anybody else experience this and have a clue what this might be?

I never had a problem with my '08 4.8i. It ate up the hills.

Vehicle should downshift, when the engine begins to bog.

You say it revs loudly? Is the tranny slipping? How can it rev loudly if it's stuck in a high gear?

I'm confused with that point.

I live in S.F., there are one or two hills here. My 35d tackles them just fine.

The tranny can be a bit slow, but if I use the Kickdown feature it acts as expected, and switches to an appropriate gear.

Have you tried the kickdown feature (pressing the accelerator all the way to the floor, so the vehicle realizes you want it to switch gears?)

This is relatively common, and something many vehicles require.

A human is always going to be faster, than all but transmissions that are specifically designed for high performance vehicles (M3 variants, porsche turbos, M5s, etc.).

I had this happen to me once on a steep hill, and then the next time it was fine. I guess the computer just got a bit confused.

Having same issue and my problem is more constant. Have had the transmission software upgrade back in the fall but it did not change the dynamic.

The OP is saying it doesn't shift up as he accelerates up a hill.

Wait.... what? The tranny is holding a lower gear, not overshifting and holding a higher gear. Why would he want to try to kick it down to an even lower gear?

i agree he says that.
mine does it too, and i LIKE how it holds the lower gear a bit longer
on the hill. im sure its supposed to be doing this.

Sorry about the confusion.

To clarify...the car stays in a gear (let's just use 3rd as an example) and won't go into the next gear (4th) going up a hill even when I have enough speed to do so. Thus, it revs really loudly. It's like the transmission is confused about what it's supposed to do. Even once the car gets to the top of the hill and becomes straight, it takes time for the car to finally shift into the right gear.

That make any more sense? Thanks.
