35d Toxic smoke - Likely the Urea injector

So I drove into my driveway, the small orange engine light had come on, but all seemed fine. Suddenly smoke pours out of the engine compartment and toxic fumes fill the cabin. It was like amonia - couldn't breathe and it was nasty stuff.

Turned off engine, opened hood and all doors, let it settle down.

Pressed the SOS, called dealer, etc. X5 is there now, we have a loaner and I will report back to you all the results of the repair.

This is the second time since Christmas that it had to be flat deck towed into the dealership. First time was the Reduced Power issue (see my thread on that http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e70-forum...same-time.html).

Still love the X, but really hoping that it won't be a unit plagued with issues.

Anyway, I will update you when I have more information about this latest issue.

My main concern with the whole DEF system is the amount of plumbing and pumps involved in BMWs two tank system. And worse yet the two tanks are on opposite sides of the engine & exhaust. All it takes is one loose fitting and you can end up with a some pretty unpleasant stuff leaking onto hot metal

Hope it all gets fixed quickly and you get back to enjoying your ride.

So as this happened yesterday and coincidentally, they had the part...I have it back now. Super quick turnaround, which is great.

Urea Injector was the culprit. It was broken due to "brittle plastic".

Parts used to repair:

18-30-7-807-206 Meter Unit
83-19-0-441-139 Diesel Exh. Fluid

It still has some of the ammonia smells, but they say it will burn off in time.

X5 back up and running as normal again.

For the idly curious, RealOEM.Com lists this "brittle plastic" part that is attached to the exhaust system as costing in the neighborhood of $400

Phew that's good news. I reckon one more major flatbed tow and you should ask for new X5. Thats what I did.
