After doing more thorough rrsearch I found out that my truck won't even need tpms since its a canadian suv (I'm in montreal, canada)I'm really glad I found this out before dropping 200-300$ on sensors!
I was told the same thing yesterday! According to the BMW dealer it measures wheel speed and does not need a sensor. You can tell by the valve stem. Steel=sensor black=no sensor.

I couldn't find any info googling on this - all I see is that the M3 switched in 2010 - is it for sure that the x5 did as well?
This "issue" seems to show up on threads from time to time. I have a 2010 35d and purchased the "old" kind of TPM sensors from PYSPEED for around $200 with shipping (vs $350+ for the "new" kind). I cannot comment on what works for 2011 models but these sensors work fine on my winter wheels - just go into the appropriate iDrive module and reset your TPMS once installed.

Did put on the aftermarket 20" without any sensors and works fine. Maybe just a Canadian thing?

I believe Canada uses the less costly, older system which simply measures relative rotational speed to detect when the effective diameter of a wheel/tire changes. No special sensors are needed, as the ABS and traction control system already have wheel speed sensors in-place.

The U.S. measures the actual air pressure using the in-the-wheel sensor.

my research can confirm this.

the US X5's had to get the tpms by law! us canadian dont have the same law in place.

I tried to search, but could not find answer. I have 2009 X5d with 212's (19in) and buying a set of factory 214s (20in). Will the TPMS sensors from my 212's fit on the 214's or do I need to buy a new set of TPMS' for the new rims?

Yes they will fit, but if you plan on using both sets of rims I would invest in new sensors so as to not have to keep swapping them out.

Thanks! I prob won't keep the 212's. I live in NoCal and don't plan on doing much, if any, winter driving. When we go up to Tahoe, we usually just take the Sienna with snow chains.
