Leaving the X5

Well folks, I test drove the Porsche Panamera today and I fell in love with Porsche's new interior (though much less so with the looks of the Panamera).

I particularly liked the 4.3inch TFT in the instrument cluster and the fact that you can control it directly from the steering wheel. i.e. call up phone functionality, nav, tpm etc etc. Really really nice.

Materials were really top notch and everything was very well laid out. I thought I would not like the buttons on the console, but they actually looks well laid out in person, and I found them to be quite functional.

The 2011 Cayenne has an almost identical interior to the Panamera, and the Turbo is just a beast of a vehicle. I know the X5 M is also a fantastic option, but it just isn't doing it for me. I can't quite put my finger on why, but I cannot seem to get excited about it no matter how much I want to.

I've been in the X5 since 2007, and I think it is an awesome vehicle. I think part of my desire is to have something new and different from another X5. I'll likely do a 3 year lease and then come back to the X when it goes to the new styling in 2013(?) (assuming I like it!)

Anyway, any last thoughts, advice, suggestions from you all before I pull the trigger?

Not a one. Seems like you've done all the research - driving the panamera should pretty much cover any questions on the cayenne, from driving performance to interior... time to 'pull the trigger'.

(I never understand these kind of threads, BTW...)

My wife has a Cayenne GT2, so I have driving experience in the Cayenne (as well as the current turbo and turbo S) albeit not the new turbo.

One of my complaints about the current Cayenne was that I didn't like the tech/interior as much as the X5. That is the reason I bought up the interior of the Panamera as it is pretty much identical to the new Cayenne interior. My point was not to say that it would in anyway drive like the Cayenne - obviously 2 very different vehicles

I was not at all clear about this in my original post and I apologize

What is the point of my post? Basically to stimulate discussion. I think it is good to discuss the X5 in context of the competition and the new Cayenne is definitely competition (Autospies had a decent post about this very topic).

Also, perhaps others have gone down the same path as I have, and have reached a different conclusion. I think there are a lot of folks with thoughtful opinions on this board & I would love to hear their thoughts and perspective.

As an aside, If you know where I can go test drive a Turbo Cayenne today, I'd be happy for the pointer!

I have a Panamera 4S, and the fit and finish is similar, though not as posh...but it still looks fresher than an X5...I would have gone with the new Cayenne but it's too similar to the Panamera so I opted for the 2011 X5. Porsche ergonomics are second to none

New Cayenne or X5LCI

I am in the same boat.

Except that I am deciding between a 2011 Cayenne Hybrid S and the X5LCI3.5.

I have been wavering to and for and get come to any decision.

Concern about the Cayenne is the new hybrid system that seems to be taken straight from the Audi/Tourag. How much of Porsche is there in that thing?

As for X5LCI - its an improved X5 and a 7 seater...

Grateful for any thoughts...

I think the new Cayenne looks a bit better than the previous generation (aka the Toad) and is worth a look. That's not saying a lot, though. I have to say that I'm really happy with my current 4.8 in every way, and I don't even know if I'll switch to the 50i or M...much less the Pepper.

The interior of the Cayenne is definatly better than the X's so I can understand why you'd jump ship After all - when you are driving you are not looking at the exterior - however - cruising down the mile in Chicago feeling good about one self and then catching a reflection from a store window - it would ruin it - the porsche's are just so heinously ugly that there should be a law against them - maybe banning them from public areas during daytime or something like that

Driving a nice car should be partly about making the world look better - and with a Pepper ... you are not.

Hi Beagle,

I believe that the system was originally meant for the Audi Q7, but then Audi ditched "hybridizing" the Q and Porsche picked it up. I think that they have been working on it for a couple years so it definitely will have the Porsche signature

Strange as it may sound, I have personally bounced back and forth from the Hybrid to the Turbo. I still have the angel on my right shoulder saying: "Hug the earth, get the Hybrid," while the devil on my left shoulder is saying: "Be a man, get the turbo!"

On the one hand I remember how painful it was filling up the X5 4.8 when gas prices were over $4/gallon - it doesn't matter whether you can afford it or not - seeing the whopping bill each time you (frequently) refuel is still painful.

On the other hand performance has its price, and while the Cayenne hybrid turns in very respectable times and is no slouch, it's no Turbo i.e. 0-60 in 6.4 vs 4.4 is a big difference. But then again I have an Aston Martin and how often to I floor it and really get the most out of it? etc etc... blah blah... and so goes the inner dialogue.

My biggest concern with the Cayenne hybrid is more along the lines of it being a first year production vehicle using technology that is entirely new to Porsche. I would be worried about reliability as it is a very complex vehicle. On the other hand that is what road side assistance is for

As for the X5 35. I think it is a great vehicle with a wonderful engine. I love my '07 X5. Part of my reason for jumping is that I just want something new, and I feel the X5 is a little dated (for me). If I were coming into the market, it would be a lot tougher choice for sure; however, with where I am today, I would take the early adopter risk and go with the Cayenne Hybrid

I will add that I have the 3rd row seats in my X5 and they are basically useless. But they do fold away and would be nice to have if squeezing kids in the back is a factor.

Yep, do the lease on the X5M instead.

I love mine, one of the best cars I've ever owned.
