I appreciate your humor and nitpicking to wording, but it was sudden to me, and I was late to important client meetings (twice! - because next day's morning the loaner broke on me on the way to work), so wasnt that funny when you are presenting, 20 people are waiting for you to show up...

Sounds like a different issue. Mine as well as well as the 2 others on this thread had oil leaking through a bad seal on the charge air hose. Per Ard's replies, why there was oil in there in the first place is a concern, and hopefully they just didn't put a seal to contain oil that isn't supposed to be there in the first place.....Interestingly, when I look on OEM.com with the part numbers that dmfelger provided, they show different part numbers for the seal on X5 units produced before 4/09......Makes me wonder if they realized they had a defective part and changed it. I bought mine 2/09...Hmmmmm.

Well, sounds like your problem is with intercooler hose, which is different. Mine did not kick off a CEL. I just noticed the oil on the ground.....

Good luck!

Can I ask which hose was leaking/replaced?

I think mine is still leaking oil. Saw a few new drops in the driveway....I'll keep an eye on it for a couple days to make sure it isn't just residual oil from previous leak, but I doubt that will be the case.....I'll bring it back to dealer Mon or Tues....

Link to e90 forum with some good diagrams of the turbo system, albeit for the 335i.....

2007 Engine Tech: How the N54 works (must read!!!) - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum - E90Post.com

Still useful info. Makes me even more concerned that there is oil in the charge air hose. If they just sealed the oil in by replacing a seal, is this going to go into the intercooler and clog it up? Is it going to go through the intercooler and back into the cylinders?

I have a lot of questions to ask the dealer...I am wondering if I should be asking BMWNA to answer to this question...

I wonder if there is a faulty seal INSIDE the turbo that is seeping oil. Will this oil foul the impellers by caking onto them and eventually causing imbalance and failure?

I'll try to get more answers......Thanks Ard for piquing my curiosity!:thumbup

I would like to know which hose was leaking too!

As much as I appreciate members describing problems and resolutions, descriptions pale in comparison to a transcript of the relavant part of the service report including part numbers.

Sorry folks, was in a rush yesterday... so here is the replaced part:

CHARGE AIR LINE (11-61-8-506-079), which also came with a temperature sensor bolted on (13-62-7-812-741).

RealOEM.com * BMW E70 X5 3.5d INTAKE MANIFOLD-SUPERCHARG.AIR DUCT/AGR (#12 in the picture)

According to write up from mechanic, they had to do smoke test, as the cut in the rubber part of the air line was unnoticeable and only opened up on deceleration. Perhaps it was damaged from the day one, and vibration finally opened it up more and more over time. And they spent 8 hr of labor doing diagnosis, opened PUMA case, etc... tried all other things before were instructed by BMW NA to do smoke test. The actual write up is quite long and I am not going to type the whole thing, but they did lots of work removing and inspecting various components.
