35d Oil Leak and recall

Took the 35d in for service, oil leak on passenger side on the ground. Looked underneath and oil dripping from an area I did not know oil would be at.

SA also informed me of two recalls; Replace charge-air temp sensor and re-program (probably for the sensor) they would take care of.

Calls next day and says "turbocharger issue" and waiting for instructions from New Jersey BMW NA.

Day after SA says BMWNA wants them to take turbo apart (don't know which one) and try to find source or cause of leak. I would rather they replace the whole unit and not try to use my unit as a training exercise to fix a leak. Parts probably in Germany.

Keep you posted. In the shop for three days. Maybe they'll keep it for 30 days and I can get a new one. Have a 10 328 coupe, SB with red interior, navi and M sport pkg for loaner. Sure is fun to drive.

The campaign for the temp sensor and programming is known, and a good fix so far- no concerns about that, IMO.

Bummer about the turbo. My guess is you will get a new turbo for sure- no dealer will rebuild those. They may be asking them to take it apart to make sure it was a turbo failure so that if they replace it they won't blow up a new turbo..not so much that they can fix it. Turbos need an oil supply and a problem with the oil line to it could lead to turbo failure- if they put in a new turbo it too could blow.

Still, I'd have the new turbo on order right away...

Seal leak on charge air hose between intercooler and turbo. R&I and changed seal. In shop for three days. But this also included oil change, top off DEF and recall issues.

Wait, no oil leak?!?!?

They are saying it was a leak on the "Charge Air Hose"?

There should be no oil in there, so a leak there should not lead to oil leaking.... if there is oil leaking it is coming from somewhere else.

Maybe they replaced a seal on the turbo?

When I have work done, I am speaking to the mechanic or SA **BEFORE** they complete the work. I do not like being told "Its done" only to find it isn't done or it is half-assed.

Keep us posted. Could be they did something else, and failed to properly document your receipt- did you check the warranty document to make sure it matched yours? Is there a part number for the seal they replaced?

As ARD has already posted, this does not make sense. If they fixed an oil leak involving the turbo-charger(s), your paper work should include a part number from this parts diagram on RealOEM. If it doesn't, you need to buy an oil drip pan ASAP so you can protect your garage floor

Do these recalls effect all 2010 X5 35D's or is the repair being done only if the effected part breaks??

Good question.

First, it is not a 'safety recall' which means they will not contact you and tell you "Come in and have this done". At your next contact with BMW service, you will be told (if your car is affected) that there is an open campaign to make this fix. It does not need to be demonstrating the failure.

I don't know what VIN/Dates are affected, but I can tell you my 2010 was built on the first day they began building 2010s, and it needed this fix...

FWIW when I was scheduling our 35d for it's first oil service our SA told me about both service campaigns. I mentioned that the Air Temp Sensor had already been replaced. He said that BMW required them to replace it again anyway.

BTW the Air Temp Sensor is a fairly inexpensive part ( $26 ) and is very easy to replace (hence pretty low labor costs). So I guess this assures that the replacement is from the 'new batch' of parts and reduces the potential for 35d owner Check Engine Light fright
