I just pull a small trailer, but if I was pulling something a bit bigger, I would have done the BMW harness which is pre-wired, so a 2 minute install and then have the car programmed so that you get the stability control programming for the trailer, but I would still use the same hitch as it works and looks better than the OEM one. Price would end up being the same approx if you did this hitch and bmw wiring and programming.

X5 hitch

Is the height from the ground to the bottom of the receiver hitch less than 12 inches?

According to hitch and trailer manufacturers, the hitch ball height should be between 17"-19" above ground for optimal trailer handling and control. In this pic it appears the receiver is way too low and will have adverse affects on the vehicle and trailer handling while driving. A factory installed hitch will eliminate this issue.

planning to get the Draw Tite referred from roadkillrob. i use it mainly for bike rack. so the height is not too much problem too me.

maybe this high-low drop adapter will help for someone need to tow other stuff

I actually just use one of these Ball Mount 3/4" Rise or 2" Drop, 6,000 lbs Draw-Tite Ball Mounts 2923

It is a 2" drop or 3/4" rise, I run it in the 3/4" rise position, hitch is at 11-11.5" form the ground, so the 3/4" rise makes it right around 12"

After reading all the very helpful posts here and elsewhere, I've decided to go with a Drawtite hitch for my 2012 X5 primarily because of the appearance but cost was a close 2nd consideration. I looked for a Drawtite 75600 and the installation instructions for the 75600 also show a 44590. Turns out the 44590 is a Reese Towpower brand of the exact same Drawtite hitch, which tech support at Cequent Performance Products (parent of both companies) confirmed. I got lucky on Amaz... who had a 44590 for sale at a GREAT price but with a picture that didn't look right. I decided to take a gamble because the price was VERY competitive with FREE shipping. Received the hitch today and it doesn't look like the picture on the Amaz... website. The actual hitch looks just like a Drawtite 75600! Just wanted to contribute to this forum to share the fact that a Drawtite 75600 and a Reese Towpower 44590 are identical. If you want a copy of the email from the manufacturer, just send me a private message.

I wasn't wild about the large cutout myself (in this case on my 2010 X5), so I went to the effort of taking an OEM cover and having it cut, slimmed and re-powdercoated. I had the plug-in re-oriented to point down to allow attachment underneath the bumper.

I'm planning on doing the same with my LCI X5.
