The eco credit is absolutely still available. Cheers.

Why is the car used with only 2800 miles? Demo? Lots of problems? Buy back?

I am always suspect about a used car.

2. Buying a used car from a dealer is never a good deal, UNLESS it comes with the CPO warranty. Without that you might as well go to to Joes Used Car Lot. Seriously. The are just a used car lot when selling a used BMW

3. $65k for a '11 diesel? Invoice price minus the 4500 eco credit is around 55.8k. THis includes shipping, training, maco. Add dealer profit to this number. So the 'real dollar' difference seems to be 52k to 56.5 of $4500. You are taking a one year older car, perhaps not everything you want, with 2800 miles... Actually not horrible, but not a screaming deal.

4. There is no adaptive cruise- you might be thinking the adaptive suspension?

Of course they are making the money on the trade value imo

I'm using the MSRP as an attempt to compare the used one I'm looking at vs a new one. Obviously I would not use MSRP when negotiating for a new purchase. I agree with you 100%.

1. I didn't know new X5's could be bought for $500-$1000 over cost. Very good to know.

2. I agree with you on this point also. I'm not limited to buying from the dealer. This one just happened to be at the dealer. I told myself I would only by CPO if I wasn't buying new but apparently this one is too new to certify.

3. My CA said the eco credit is no longer available....only the $1800 federal tax credit. Did I get bad information?

4. Yeah you are correct. I mispoke.

This is a concern of mine as well. Apparently it was a demo vehicle at another dealership in another state. If that was the case, why didn't that dealer sell the vehicle at their dealership. Maybe a dealer trade?

The service history shows replacing a steering component (not sure the exact part) but was clean other than that. Nonetheless, the current dealer has had this for sale is 3/22 and dropped the price 3 times now. It makes me wonder why it hasn't sold yet.

Keep the comments coming guys. I have an open mind and want to learn as much as possible.

A 2010 X5 35d with 2800 miles that was in service in 10/09 sounds awfully similar to our old one. Does this one happen to be Vermillion Red with Saddle Brown interior and Light Poplar Wood?

Sounds like a different one. This one is Space Gray with Black Nevada and Dark Bamboo Wood.

Why did you get rid of yours so soon? Problems? Dislikes?

Ours was a lemon. Way too many problems of all sorts going on.

I'm kind of surprised that the dealer has had that diesel for so long and that it didn't sell when everybody thought the diesel credit will go away in August 2009. Many dealers struggled with having enough allocations. Are you sure it was a demo car and doesn't have a bad history?

Otherwise, I have no other information to give. Good luck with your purchase!

Best info is the eco credit is on til June 30.... search here. It may be that dealer has no order slots available prior to June 30...or he wants to move this one.

"demo" is another word for "liar". it can mean anything. Really a demo, so the sales guys can beat the piss out of it, or the wife of the dealership drives the new car for 4 months, or it was going to be a lemon and they took it in as a swap prior to formally lemoning it to avoid the title brand. You'll never know. Don't bother asking. Indeed, one reason to move cars around to a new dealer is then the salesmen can make up crap and don't technically need to lie.

It hasn't sold simply because anyone that can afford a near-luxury $60k SUV can cover the $4k price difference to get a new one! They will sell it to someone ignorant or so credit challenged they must buy it from a dealer helping them out...

Finally the CPO rules are "6 months" or "6000 miles"... it isn't the 'same model year' that restricts it. Also, a demo cannot be certified if it was not 'placed in service'... if it was just driven by the dealership with dealer plates, then there is no 'initial owner'.

Eco credit currently valid till June 30, 2010. Car can be ordered by then, just has to be delivered by Aug 31, 2010.

They have kept renewing it each month for a long time, so it's likely that will happen... but they like to keep us guessing.

I would pass. If it is used (has been titled) then it is not a demo. Why would the current dealer take it from another dealer. Doesn't pass the smell test. I think it is a "buy back" (so not "officially" a lemon). Get what you want, don't settle.
