The Merc, Audi and Porsche are no slouches.

I don't think it is about Merc vs BMW, I think the point is that BMWNA and BMWCA were taken out of the equation. The vehicles also differ slightly, ie there would be no urea issues on the 35D in Germany.

AleK was sharp enough to notice that the survey was limited to German customers and I took it as suggesting that Germans would rate German SUV's higher than a lexus, range rover, escalade SUV. Hence I suggested that that bias would be mitigated when comparing BMW with the other German SUV's.
Your point, JCL, about urea problems would also be neutralized, I imagine, insofar as none of the German SUV's have any urine troubles in the Fatherland. |

If you run out of urea in the Black Forest, you'll know urine trouble.
(Urea is a component in human urine Aqua Bliss.) Last edited by XXX555; 06-23-2010 at 08:51 PM. |

Other than the difference in diesel, aren't all X5 made in the US, although they are german "engineered".

Yes, the are all made in the US. They are configured slightly differently for different markets, but the base vehicle is the same. What customers have to deal with in the US is a marketing company called BMWNA, and they (with their dealer network) could be a factor in initial customer satisfaction. Just see how many posters rave about their great dealers compared to how many complain about theirs.

I wasn't contrasting BMW with Mercedes or others, just noting that initial customer experiences in Germany can't necessarily be extrapolated to initial customer experiences in North America. I think there were a higher number of diesel issues in the past year in North America due to BMW's introduction of urea injection. I think it will have calmed down by next year, but I do think they had a blip, albeit with a small number of vehicles. Maybe all the diesel X5 customers in North America love their vehicles so much that they will award BMW top points, and forgive small transgressions such as leaking urea tanks, etc. Maybe all the other SUV manufacturers had the same diesel issues this past year.
