I have owned quite a few diesel SUV (From Mercedes to Toyota), and my 3.0d is the most "Refined" of them all. I simply love it.
Fuel economy is incredible, no vibration at all, no clattering sound at cruising speed, and faster from 0-60 than my wife's Porsche Cayenne V8.

EDIT>> looks like Santo already mentioned it... good stuff. Not the bulk of the discussion here but I have to ask... wasn't the old 335i engine a twin turbo? Why did they change this to a single turbo... does it all have to do with evolving technologies and the whole twin-scroll buzzword thing?

Twin scroll is a turbo design that allows BMW to get some further tuning to reduce lag (over a single large turbo). It is likely cheaper to manufacture than two small turbos. No real difference in performance. Not a significant change.

Here is a question for you guys.
Does anyone own both an X5d and a 335d? For me, the d over the 30i in the X5 was a no-brainer but I'm torn on what the engine would feel like vs the 335i. Different car, different way of driving, same engine. |

i've driven 335i loaners. i actually had one for a weekend out of town. quick car, but if i had to guess, i would think the 335D would pull better from a standstill with the low end torque typical to a diesel motor. max diesel torque is almost immediate once the turbo spools up. |

Thanks for the many informative comments! I think we will go with the gas engine since there doesnt really seem to be an advantage to the diesel. Also, last year the price of diesel exceeding the price of 93 octane gasoline. I had comuted, at the time, that with the extra price in fuel, diesel wasnt any more economic.
We are looking at the 2010, to pick one up just as the 2011 start to come out. Apparantly, the BMW dealers are having a hard time moving cars in this economy. I suppose as long as Obama keeps raising taxes and sending the economy into the shitter, deals are getting better. I just hope I dont get laid off ![]() |

You should check with your dealer and see what their remaining stock of 2010 models is. 2011 models are out now.
