BTW--I am a chick here--not knowin a lot other than what the dealer "said". So not sure of a lot. Just know there is a 60K scheduled maint. due that I was told is $$....and that your breaks may come due here soon also....put those together...they add up. AND if you can reach the 90K mile check up before the 100K/6yr there is another expense....but maybe you wont jack up that many miles.....it does seem "excessive" in miles....90K at 6 yrs...

I checked with my service advisor and he said there is no 60k check up per se. The car's service is "activity based." Can anyone confirm?

True, there is no such thing as a 60k checkup. There are Inspection I and Inspection II, and the inspections generally come up about every 30,000 miles, but it is based on the vehicle computer counting down the miles (due to fuel consumed, etc), and not strictly on mileage.

As JCL noted, a couple posts down, there is not hard & fast "60k mile" check...there is Insp II, which for most of us comes/came ~ 60k miles.
Yes, a dlr will be a bit pricey; a good BMW Indie can do the same for less, usually.

computer says 22k for front before breaks and 14k for back breaks...
also...the computer readout said "8" left on the break pads (12-0 I think the pads run).

we r debating the ext. maint. also ($2250 or so). We have 43k on the car now (just bought last week).

One thing the dealer said was there is a $$ 60k scheduled mile check up and $$ 90k mile. Andthe 60K one is very $$

?????? $2250 is a lot....my hubbie can do oil changes....and breaks but to hit the 60 k $$ maintenance....for a bit more
Dealer is scaring you into buying the plan. The female SA is telling you the truth about buying a maintenance plan late (ie unlike what they told you on the new car) because being truthful about this aspect of the sale will help make you think she is honest. What she is lying about is the $$$ 60k and $$$ 90k visits. Total BS.

True, NO 'mileage based' services. (Except maybe 100k issues which, by luck will not be covered by BMW)

As I've posted to you before, the extended maintenance is a sucker buy. It is for people who are so limited in their knowledge, interest or time, that they just 'take it to the dealer' for everything. Brakes, oil, rattles, new tires, etc, etc.

The 2250 is probably a bit more than what you will spend on maintenance at a very good, top line INDEPENDENT bmw mechanic. The dealer will just bend you over on this stuff.

If your hubby can do an "inspection I" (do a serach, do not be intimidated- and DO NOT think the term "inspection" implies some german speaking tech in a white lab coat carefully looks over your car) then he can do all the service except a few items. Figure out what they are, and estimate what that will cost. It will be far less than 2250!

The thing that terrifies me about BMWs (or would if I didnt wrench) is the BREAKDOWNS. Maintenance is maintenance- it isn't this big unknown. It will be a few oil changes, a couple of filters, MAYBE a set of front pads and rotors. You know what this is costwise....the big problem will be a blown tranny, or an active damper, or a camshaft position sensor, or a ..... Compounding the issue will be- without an extended warranty- and with a BMW maintenance plan, you will dutifully be bringing the car to the ONE place with the HIGHEST costs for repair: the dealer.

BMW just loves people that cannot figure out these cars can be worked on by non-BMW dealers....

Thanks for that great info! This is why I love you guys......

Great to know and something to ponder. I suppose BMW would NEVER offer that deal if they did not make out in the long run on THEIR end!!

I just know I never should have bought it with my new 2006 car...and was not going to get it with this used x5 I just got but...they pointed out "all the reasons" why I should...(60K miles, 90K, breaks etc).

All I know is my hubbie is pretty handy--changed the brakes in my 1995 BMW with success (and the oil)....(never had to do work on the 2006 BMW since it was under the orig. warr.). and does do oil changes on our Durango and his Infinity....

It would be GREAT to save the money--we went for broke with the X5 and dont feel like forking out another $2250 or whatever....if you follow!!

I was planning on using another shop besides BMW for any work after the CPO time is up...to save....

So I think it does make sense....they did say that the 60K was $$ but as you said..suppose "any good mechanic" could do it besides the actual BMW dealership...

THANKS for that info! I will do some searching on schedule II and break parts since I think I will be due "soon". Thanks!!!

ARD--funny!! Girl thing...
Thanks for your long comments and time!
