Short Commute and Diesel

I have been looking at the 35d and searching the internet for the good, bad, and indifferent.

My daily roundtrip commute is 24 highway miles, a mechanic told me short drives are not good for diesel engines. Since this person is not familiar with the new modern engines, I wanted to ask folks who would be in the know.

Also, has anyone changed the oil DIY? I like to change oil in my cars mid way of scheduled service. Does anyone have photos.

Where are the openings for refilling the urea tanks? Audi has it behind fuel refill door and VW puts it in the spare tire well.
