I was just sent an email notifying me that this thread had activity. I forgot to come back after my post above and relate my story from last May (2015).

I had a little water collect in the "cassette" after a sturdy rain. Shortly thereafter got funny dash lights, lot's of stuff "inoperable" etc. Got home and noticed that all brake lights including third brake light remained on even though car was off! Now really worried so got in car and turned ignition on and off, still problems and then I smelled smoke! Some sort of fire started in the passenger B-pillar near the floor. Burned through the pillar onto the carpet, curtain airbag went off and that's when I panicked and called 911. Pretty bad fire, car was totaled by insurance.

Such a bummer, I loved that car. Cost me a lot to get a newer one, I settled for the 3.5 instead of the 4.8 and still miss the growl and take off of the V8.

Definitely check your sunroof drains, watching your car burn in your driveway is terrifying. It's totally unmovable by the way, if it was in garage I would have lost my house!

Did you report this to the NSTB? if not, could you??

Thanks

This is a BMW defect that was covered by insurnace, if this was under warranty BMW should be liable...
