How did you X5 diesel do in winter?

My first winter with a diesel? Any suggestions or tips? I have a block heater and trickle charger already.

Thanks

Our '10 ran great all winter and continues to do so with 12k miles total now. DEF lasted 11k miles including short trips and lots and lots of traction with a set of Michelin Alpines. Needed a new battery in April, but other than that, no problems.

What kind of block heater? I didn't think any were available for the BMW Diesel.

I was wondering that as well. I haven't seen any OE ones, or ones that replace a core plug. There are ways to fit an aftermarket one in a radiator or heater hose, and there are the silicone pads that can be stuck on the side of the oil pan.

Something to be aware of ... Given your Canadian winters, you may see transient DEF warnings if temps dip low enough to freeze the DEF fluid in the passive tank. Shouldn't be a problem as the active tank is heated and should have enough for a couple of thousand miles even if the passive tank remains frozen for extended periods.

Mine was fine in Omaha. Got down to -22f and below freezing for a month straight. No issues at all other than reduced mileage.

Not sure about the block heater, every car has on up here and I told the dealership I wanted one so they installed one. It might not be a block heater but something else equivalent for the diesel. My first diesel and I'm not very car savvy.

Good to hear other people have not had major issues.

We had some bitterly cold weather last winter (mid -30's C plus wind chill at times). It was our first winter in our brand new 2009 X5 diesel and we had absolutely no issues due to freezing temperatures or cold. No block heater or trickle charger, in fact our Audi's (A4 and A6) didn't have block heaters either and no issues).
