Any update on MY12 ?

Would love to see the rumoured 45d (tri turbo diesel) come through the line .... viva la diesel ... would likely spell the end of the 50i in Europe ...

Is the new xDrive40d not enough? I don't see that likely just one year after tweaking a drivetrain, would be an inefficient use of R&D and certification resources.

The North American market doesn't even get the current 40d because the 35d was just introduced 2 years ago here.

6-series is supposed to get the 45d first before BMW puts on X5. It(45d engine) may not come to US.

Nope 40d is not enough ... the gap between 35d and 40d is not that great performance wise .. 45d is likely to take it closer to 50i performance ...i.e. a real performance diesel.

does anyone think that there is a legit chance that the 40d will be available in the States anytime soon?

Not likely until the E90 retires. For cost-efficiency reasons, BMW wanted a diesel that would work in more than just one model.

No. It is not at all likely to be certified for emissions for such a short model run, and so few models sold annually. If it was available in the 3, 5, 6, and 7 series, as well as the x models, and if it constituted a reasonable number of sales in each platform, that would help. There is more chance of a federalized 45d at some point, as it is the next generation diesel, but that one may not come either. BMW has said that they will bring in four cylinder diesels, and there is much more potential volume there, so that looks like the next step.

It probably comes down to whether North America switches over wholesale to diesels, without the diesel fuel tax incentives that Europe has, and after BMW eventually stops with their eco credits for their introduction of diesels.
