Rattles Documented

My 2009 has almost 25,000 miles on it and way too many rattles. I've taken it back to two different dealers and almost always got "couldn't reproduce no problems found".

So this past week I made an appt and spent considerable time documenting almost all of the rattles on video as well as setting a course where they could be reproduced almost 100% of the time.

Tomorrow when I take my X5 in for service we are going to do a 25 minute drive so the tech can hear them all first hand and then I'm going to give the following link so he can have videos online if he needs to check again. Then before I get the car back we are going to go for another 25 minute drive on the same course and if any rattles are still there then they will keep the car until it's fixed.

Hopefully this will result in all of the rattles being resolved this time around with no more "no problems found".

Here is the link:

I completely agree..the ridiculous amount of rattles mine has is a joke..

1. Drivers door (dealer fixed, they said it was the seals)
2. Gearbox area buzzing under load (dealer tried to fix, still no luck)
3. Panoramic sunroof rattle (dealer thinks it was the tail gate and tightened it, and still rattling)
4. Rear seats rattle like no tomorrow going over uneven ground (I did a temporary fix using electrical tape on the locking mechanism)

found any other rattles?

I'd be very curious to hear what resolution you get. My 2008 is very noisy, but they are very hard to pinpoint.

I will post back after I get the car back.

FYI, got a low cost handheld hd camcorder and now leave it in the car and when a rattle occurs I try and record it.

There are several other rattles but they are almost impossible to reproduce and happen very infrequently. The one I hate the most is a popping from either end of the dash which only occurs in the winter on cold mornings for the first 5 minutes or so. I'm going to get this one recorded sooner or later and then will show my dealer and see what they say.

OMG, this is horrible. Both my 2007 & 2008 X5s had rattles, but this is awful!

After my X5s, I went to 2 Mercedes ML63s and a Full Size Range Rover. The ML had some rattles (one developed in about a year, and the dealer finally fixed it after keeping the car for over ONE week. The dash bracket mount behind the dash came loose). The other rattle was a broken A/C vent clip.

Surprisingly, the Range Rover was bank vault solid, with not even the slightest rattle, even on rough road!

My current 2010 750i is almost silent. There is one annoying little rattle coming from where the sunroof cover meets the headliner, but it does not do it all the time, and it is a "padded/muffled" rattle.

Our 2010 M6 is cabrio is 100% rattle free, and the car is almost a year old & cabrios almost always rattle. Impressed!

Our 2008 G55 AMG is the WORST car in terms of rattles. It makes your X5 and my 2 E70s seem perfect. The doors, windows, A/C vents, rear door, seatbelts, dash board, center console....everything rattles, ALL the time. We're on our 3rd G-Class over the last 10 years, and the ALL rattle. My spouse is a G-Class aholic, I hate them!!!

in other words dont buy a G class?

in all seriousness it makes such a luxury car feel cheap and annoying because of all the rattles..it drives me insane.. I had an e39 that was heavily modified on fairly still suspension and that never made a creaking sound in the world..it was the last thing I would of expected getting into a brand new car..

We were able to replicate all of those rattles on the video. The problem is they have a test street they use that is fairly rough but will not reproduce those rattles consistently. We drove together down this test street and could not recreate.

I then took him on the 35 minute ride that I normally take going home that is very rough and also has some huge oversized bots dots. If I drive over the bots dots for a bit you can hear the rattles and also when you get off the dots the rattles are still their. Guess it shakes the heck out of the car and loosens up those parts that rattle.

The seat rattle only happens at certain speeds on the freeway over certain bumpy areas and is not consistent. But when it happens it is very loud and very annoying as seen on the video.

Dropped the car off Tuesday at 10:30 AM and the update today is they might have ready by end-of-business Thursday.

I think it really helped to force them to go on a long test drive as he knew I was serious this time around about taking care of the rattles. And the center console rattle happened the whole time and got louder and louder at the end and I think it was annoying the tech more than it was annoying me by the end of the drive.

*fingers crossed they get all of yours sorted*

mines going back in on the 8th December i'd be curious to know if they fix the centre console rattle..hoping that it would be a similar fix for mine..that seems to be the one that drives me insane too.
