So if you do not have a claim, you've wasted 1300. yes, peace of mind and all that... But worse case you buy 4 tires ($1160 for mich latitude tour HP **WITH** road hazard). You are within a few bucks of the insurance cost.

All the tire road hazard buys you is protection on the tires until the first required replacement...once you replace tires you can get the added tire road hazard plans. They are 40 per tire! 1300 is just mind boggling.

Thousands of people buy a new car, drive 40k miles, never get a flat (or if they do they patch it) and then replace the tires. No claims.

This 'gotta replace RFTs' and 'tires are SOOOO expensive' are both concepts promulgated by BMW dealerships to sell warranties...and when people dont have warranties to just bend them over. Add on the 'gotta match tread on AWD cars' and there you go. (FYI- NO warranty covers the replacement of the other tires that dealers tell you need replacement so as to no 'ruin the differential')

Finally, this analysis excludes breaking rims. If you are a rim breaker, disregard the analysis

I had been following this thread and knew the dealers would offer it and I also knew that I don't "really" need it. At the time of delivery, the F&A guy said that this warranty is straight from BMW and can't be had once I sign the papers and take delivery. 1300 for 5 yrs. At that time I was told that a tire (Bridgestone Dueler H/L400 Run Flat in my case) was 499 apiece.

Now, I looked at discount tire and this one is 240 apiece. The total out of the door price at discount tire turns out to be 1306.23 after the install and $160 warranty certificate and that's for 3 yrs and it's only for the tires.

How much are the best NON-RFT's?

If I blow up one RFT, can I replace that one with a NON-RFT while keeping all other RFT's?

Can I just buy the $160 warranty certificate from discount tire even though I did not buy the tires from them? Has anyone used this option?

thanks for ur time as always.

ard---Discount Tire's price for Mich Latitude is $350 fronts and $400 rears. That's $1,500 without mounting etc and that also doesn't give you RFT and there is no spare on most that have the 20" wheels. I agree all insurance policies whether it's home, car, tires, etc there will always statistically be people that never have a claim on anything. I can say from my experience after having 3 tire claims in 5 months of a 5 year warranty I am glad I did it.

So funny I came across this thread.

I declined the Tire Protection because I didn't see the point in it (55k in 2 years and no flat tires)

My 4.8i has the Sport pkg but doesn't have the upgraded tires but does have RFT's (not a fan)

So I was quite thrilled when the TPM message came on last week and I had to replace my right rear tire due to a nail

I'm planning to swap out all 4 tires next year with non-RFT's because the tread life/cost just doesn't make sense to me

1.) There are only a few options in Non-RFT in the 20s that I know of. Michelin Latitude and Continental Contacts are probably the most popular. Of the RFT options that offer better durability than the Dunlops are the Bridgestone Duelers.

2.) You probably can although it might cause some ride/alignment issues as Non-RFTs aren't going to ride the same

3.) Not sure

Not sure on yours if you have a full size spare--again, the main issue of going non-RFT after having RFT with no spare is the safety benefit especially with having kids in the car, etc. Some have suggested going non-RFT and putting a can of Fix-A-Flat in the car.

I was told by my dealer that if I replaced the tires with something else than what was stock, then the warranty would not work. Seemed like a lot of retrictions, so I declined as well. However, I did end up getting the extended maintenance at a discount! I calculated the costs of oil changes, services, and brakes and it already covered the costs so it seemed to work well for me.
