Transmission on a xdrive50i

How is the trany on the new xdrive50i. On comfort how does it feel? And on sport mode is the 8 speed responsive? Some likes and dislikes. Much appreciated.

I've driven mine for about 600 miles and have found the transmission to be very smooth and responsive. I had a 2007 E70 3.0 with a 6 speed and felt like the transmission was never in the "right" gear when I needed it to be. So far, that is not the case with the 8 speed / V8.

The new 8 speed auto is the best automatic I've owned. Period. It is impressively smooth, yet responsive in shifting whether light throttle or heavy throttle. In sport mode its noticeably quicker shifting and a little more abrupt but never harsh or slamming gears like the older 6 spd auto could, especially 2-1.

It is amazing to start in 1st and note the 7 shifts as you smoothly accelerate to 50 mph. The engine RPM change is your only clue.

I just wish the X5 would offer paddles like the X6 or Ms. I had them on an '06 550i with the sport auto and my Z4 35i DCT. The manual mode shifting with the shift lever works OK but isn't ideal for frequent up down shifting on a twisty road.

With the aditional 50hp on the TT motor and the 8speed trans, The X5 is now a great ride. I felt the old 4.8 w/ a six speed trans was always down shifting too far and the car was not responsive until the next shift. You will love the new 8speed.

I own an '11 X5d with the 6spd but had a loaner 8spd '11 model while mine was getting programming updated and the oil change this past week. The 8spd transmission shifting was firm and responsive so no complaints on my part there. The thing I didn't care for was the fact that the transmission is shifting so much in stop and go traffic under normal acceleration in an effort to keep RPM's down and fuel mileage up with so many forward gears that it feels as though it is shifting between gears more often than engaged in any one gear which gives kind of a herky-jerky acceleration from stoplight to stoplight. Not necessarily a downside and I understand the mileage benefits, just an FYI.
