For those local to our facility in Anaheim, we can program the option through the OBD2 port.

For those NOT local, SmartTV will perform the same task, as well as the added option of turning on/off the safety interlock in case the vehicle is loaned or driven by someone else.

For those opting for the software solution - programming is performed by us. We do not perform remote coding - there are too many variables that can leave you stranded with a dead module or an unknown person taking complete control of your laptop to program.

For those not local or like to show off their DIY skills: the SmartTV module will be the best solution. Here are instructions for installing the SmartTV into a 3-series, the same steps apply for the X5:

Well "searches" of this site, other BMW sites and google is yielding nothing with regards to any hidden BMW menus to unlock this without having to use hardware and bring it to someone for coding.

I really don't want to give someone remote access to my laptop and I certainly don't want my dash taken apart which elevates the chance of introducing rattles or other problems in the future. Though I have installed a Pioneer Z3 touch screen navigation before. I'm just not into pulling apart the dash on a $60k+ vehicle.

So I guess I'll have to wait....

I had this done (and many other) remotely by Patryk and everything works perfectly. You would think from the title of this thread that oil was just discovered in the middle of the Hudson river.

I paid a whopping $225 for the following:

1.Enable remote folding mirrors and windows/sunroof opening/closing 2.Enable One-touch sunroof venting 3.Enable TV/DVD-in-motion (only for the CIC) 4.Enable M3 digital speedometer in the instrument cluster 5.Enable remote trunk opening/closing (X5/X6 only) 6.Disable a bulb check error (LED bulbs, HIDs, etc.) 6. Automatic door unlocking after shutting down the engine

It was a no brainer.

His work and integrity is all over the boards. And he does everything to OEM specs.

I absolutely recognize the need to make money. However, on things like coding or hidden menus....and maybe it's just the IT engineer in me...but we usually just blog or post this type stuff for free. Kind of like open source code.

Now if something is being built or a 3rd party program which has to be paid for is needed, then that is a different story. That being said the price should reflect the licensing/hardware costs related to the coding. $225 a pop feels a bit steep, but maybe licensing and software is several thousand?

BMW's latest software/hardware called ISTA will run you a cool 30K or so. If you're savvy enough to hack the system and figure all this out then obviously that is great too.

The price is a reflection of supply and demand or what average buyers are willing to pay for a specific service. It appears that is the going rate for those 6 or so features.

From my perspective, I paid $225 and the total cost of the X5 was a cool 70 or so. That amounts to .32% of the X5. Like I said, it was a no brainer for me.

Items 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 certainly seem like no brainers to me. Only downside is if you accidentally open or close something on yourself. They don't impact any others on the road.

Item 3 doesn't seem like a no brainer to me, only because of the risk of driver distraction. There are enough distracted drivers out there already, that giving drivers another thing to see other than the road in front just seems questionable. The consequences are not limited to the purchaser of these features, but can impact innocent third parties.

1. I am OVERJOYED that we are getting more options for software/coding... I am personally going to take a flyer on an overseas vendor to maybe avoid some of the financial abuse. And if it works I'll add my vote to their reputation.

2. Someone posted that as an IT engineer, this stuff should be free, or public domain or everyone should just post their work and let the info flow. Fine idea, love to have that happen....but answer this question: Why do the IT guys keep hard drive recovery techniques essentially a secret? That is one black art that remains un-discussed in large part.

3. If you have this coded (by Patryk or EAS) what will happen if BMW needs to "recode" your car? Is the upgrade gone?

4. Suggesting someone buy a nav tv module as the only alternative to coming into the shop is not great advice.
