The difference is that by default AT&T (and most other cariers) do not allow you to tether your iPhone to your computers through your 3G connection. So it becomes necessary to jailbreak it and use Apps like MyWi.

It appears that the new version is already out in the States, but oddly enough, not yet here in BMW country

Strange - the part is even made in Germany. My dealer had one in stock, so I snatched it up while I wait for my X5 to be built, in case they run out again.

AFAIK there was a recall on overheating versions, and this one now has a fan (and labels that refer to it as "version 2.0", and part number 84.21.2.218.390-02).

Ah yes, sorry I forgot about your antiquated cell network/providers. Here in Australia all providers allow the use of Personal Hotspot for free.

Well, it's not just stateside. T-Mobile Germany has the same limitation. Gotta keep using MyWi, but works the same as hot spot. My only concern is the overheating phone problem since it's hidden away inside the armrest. I hope the built-in fan is enough to keep my iPhone from melting!

So has anyone actually been able to utilize the new ConnectedDrive features yet? The new iPhone 4 adapter is a primary accessory of that system, which I guess is entirely new for this year. I'm mostly curious to hear how the internet works in the car. I would imagine that the main screen will connect to the internet using the Edge connection through the iPhone, which is docked into it's adapter under the armrest.

Is it possible to open any internet site through the main screen, or only Google searches, as most pictures seems to show?

Also, does the iPhone 4 in the cradle get dangerously hot when using the Hotspot feature/app to be able to use additional devices such as laptops in the car?

Pardon the dumb question, but..

I was waiting on the iPhone 4 adapter forever. Then I gave up.

I bought an iPod Touch 4th Gen instead. The battery lasts forever and it holds twice as much. And actually.. I really like it. Very sleek design.

Now, of course, the center console on the X5 is TINY. There is no sunglass holder, so there goes a good portion of it. I bought the car with the Smartphone Integration.

I recall reading somewhere not toooooo terribly long ago that they were ALSO making an iPod Touch 4th Gen adapter to be released at the same time as the iPhone 4 adapter.

Was this a hallucination, or does such a thing ALSO exist?
If it does, what is the part number?
(I also remember reading that it cost almost as much as a damn iPod touch)

I ordered one and it came today. It dosent seam to work. My Part number is 84-21-2-218-390. The Iphone 4 fits in very snug. But the Booklet that came with it refers to the IPhone 3G/3GS.

Well the Box says 84-21-2-218-390 but the back of the device says 84-21-2-218-390-2

No Charging no anything?

Off to the Dealer on Friday.

You don't say what month your X5 was produced. The MEDIA part # is correct assuming you have "MEDIA cradle: which requires 2011.75 (produced 3/11 onward) with Option 6NR." The "-2" at the end is just the hardware version number.

BTW, this provides all MUSIC cradle features plus video playback and PlugIn. All other BMW Apps features (BMW Connected, Pandora) work through USB as well as both the Music and Media cradles. I wish I had this option in my 2008 X5.
