Please help! Will my engine blow up??

Hi everyone

I have a 2007 E70 3.0si which was delivered to me in Oct 2006. I haven't had many major problems with it until yesterday, when my wife reported that after stopping the car and removing the key and exiting the vehicle, there was a very loud sound (she said it was like a jackhammer going off) coming from the engine area for about 30 seconds.

Given that my warranty was about to expire last fall 2010, I had the lifters replaced in Nov 2010 to address the intermittent "metalic" ticking noise that was occuring on start up. (This procedure is more fully described by Tae in http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ld-starts.html). This is the only major work that has happened to the engine of the vehicle. I own the X5 and this obviously has both my wife and I concerned. I did open the hood and noticed that a piece of insulation/weatherstripping had fallen off from somewhere.

Does anyone 1) have any idea what the 'jackhammer' sound could be and 2) has anyone had the lifter replacement service and experienced a louder engine rumble sound at idle [at stoplights or even on startup] -- this is the other change I noticied since it came back from service is more engine noise in the cabin.

I would just like to be armed with some info from the community prior to visiting the dealer. Thanks for any relevant feedback.

Sounds like run-on, or dieseling, from the description. That is when the engine continues to run after the key is shut off, due to carbon build-up in the cylinders igniting left-over fuel. Not common.

Does the cooling fan continue to run after truck is off? And you said some weather striping fell off. Maybe it was in the path of the fan, and that's what gave the "jack hammer" sound.

Just thinking out loud.

Do by any chance have the 3rd row with the air suspension? Wondering if its a noisy compressor your hearing while the vehicle is off?

Fan can run after the car is off, so could be that. Check your fan for damage as once damaged they are out of balannce and tend to come apart and damage the rad and fan shroud.
