Problem with BMW Assist activation

Hi,

I just got a new 2012 BMW X5 50i and the BMW Assist service won't activate. In the various screens under the ConnectedDrive menu item, the "Activate service" option is grayed out and a "Network Unavailable" message is displayed. Plus, when I push the SOS button, the call is directed to our local 9-1-1 service instead of BMW Assist. I confirmed that my account is registered with BMW Assist and the dealer couldn't find the problem either. Any ideas what might be wrong?

Wait, the dealer can find the "problem", but he cannot find the "cause" or "solution", right? I mean he agrees it isn't working correctly, right?

Send BMW a letter and tell them they have X days until you lemon it. Offer to assist in any way you can, but on X,Y,2011, they can buy it back.

In terms of technical tips, I'd wonder if the cellular data link is unplugged or defective... did the BMW dealer do a complete diagnostic? Or is this the sales pukes 'helping' you?

Yes. The dealer acknowledges it isn't working correctly but they don't have a solution. The TA ran a diagnostic on it and will send the results to BMW for further analysis. Apparently, this is not the first time they've seen this particular problem with some of the newer vehicles.

Assist has stopped working on my 2010 35d as well. Dealer now tells me it was a one year subscription but I thought it was free for 4.

Peter

The dealer is wrong my BMW assist still works on my 2010 35d after one year and 3 months. It is supposed to be good for 4 years. Call BMW assist at 888-333-6118. They should be able to get it working.

You must not be in Canada. It is one year here. I never did activate mine as they wanted my credit card for automatic charges every year before they would turn it on the first time. I declined.

It finally came to life after a couple weeks. Maybe it took some time to process the paperwork in order to activate our account.

Thanks Chuck and chrgosselin - I was also told it was four years and that it what is in the manual (I have the premium pack). Ive sent this off to BMW and await their response. I specifically asked this question when I specced the vehicle and got the '4 year' answer!
