Haven't start the car again (yet) since sitting on the garage the whole sunday. I'll try it monday a.m. to take the car out of the garage to position it in the driveway for tow truck to haul it. The more I am convinced we have the same problem. Instead of google the problem, I should have gone straight to this forum...Thanks kthankz

It's funny how I'm conditioned to all my BMWs making ridiculously loud fan noises in the Phoenix summer heat. The various Lexi and Hondas make a gentle hum, while my E36 325, E46 330, E53 X5 all sound like a room full of industrial fans about to blow.

My E70 35i is too new to tell, but I won't be surprised if it makes just as loud a ruckus as its brethren.

I absolutely HATE that about my X. What is the deal with that? I feel like I need to run "open headers" just to drowned that sound out. Geeez! Reminders me of a Issuzu Rodeo. They made the same tornado wind noise, and I hate that my X has anything in common with that SUV.

Wonder how a bad waterpump causes increased fan noise... was it a seized bearing that was causing belt noise not air noise???

i got bent over big time on this. same loud fan noise and over heat warnings on the dash. had it towed, and they replaced the water pump and thermostat. 2008 x5 3.0si with 75000 miles on it.

the pumps are electric and probably more prone to failure than the belt driven ones.

BMWs are known for unreliable water pumps. I believe the tech editor of Roundel magazine recommends replacing it preventatively around 60K, and replacing the radiator around 100K.
