Thoughts on Extended Warranty and diesels
I have a 2009 X5d with 48000 miles and drive a lot in my job. This is the finest vehicle I have ever owned and no problems except some DEF sensor and subsequently one of the tanks had to be replaced. I have been reading up on the pros and cons of purchasing extended warrantees. There are hundreds of posts and opinions, many of which I have read. However diesels have only been sold in the US since 2009. Hence most owners are probably still under factory warranty and I presume most independent BMW garages have not seen many diesels. Simple maintenence like oil, brakes, transmission are likely the same as any E70. But diagnosis and repair of engine, exhaust, emissions are unique to diesels. I am therefore inclined towards purchasing at least an extended warranty ( not maint.) since I am likely to use the dealer for any major repairs. Dealer repairs will be the most expensive so the warranty also makes sense to me. Thanks for any feedback. |

Unlike most people on our Forum, I am a BIG believer in FACTORY (not 3rd Party) Extended Warranties.
A while back, my favourite Aunt bought a 540i. She was kind of "talked into" an extended BMW warranty at the time of purchase. I think she paid $2000 or $2500 at the time. Once her factory warranty expired, her extended warranty covered over $10,000 (yes $10,000) worth of repairs over 3 years. Well worth it. Also my Mom's E320 extended factory warranty paid for itself in ONE repair. And years back, we had extended warranty on a long wheelbase S500. Extended warranty was a godsend!!! Each self closing door unit was almost $1000.00, and when power windows failed, they were like $800 at the time (it's not a real Mercedes, if all power windows work at the same time .

the only reason why i bought my e70 recently was due to it including the CPO for 100k. I would say do it.

Havent you already missed the 45,000 mile cut off for the BMW extended warranty?
I happen to believe in the warranty, especially for those that are not DIYers. And the maintenance is a rip off no matter how unhandy you are.... A |

Details from dealership
I just spoke to the dealers Business Manager.
Evidently there was a short lived 45,000 mile restriction, but that has been waived. You can buy the Powertrain Plus, Gold or Platinum up to 50,000 miles or 48 months from start date. Pricing for 2009 X35d with 48000 miles 5yr/100K/Gold = $3410 6yr/100K/Gold = $4070 5yr/100K/Plat = $3810 6yr/100K/Plat = $4570 Service = 6yr/100K = $2495. She said these are the MSRP from BMW. Also said that for the diesel there is a 60K service and she thought one additional service that is covered by the warranty in addition to all the oil, brakes, etc . . . I have to check the Warranty Booklet. |

Lemme guess: She was pushing the maintenance?
Do keep in mind that there are TIME based services that neither the car nor the dealer will keep good track off: As I recall- coolant, brake fluid...if you are due anything based on time, get in in now. Those prices look good for 'dealer MSRP' (msrp is all over the place, BMW doesnt publish NATIONAL msrp)... ping a few sponsors here, PRIVATELY, and see what price they can give you. FYI a description of the coverages and other msrps is somewhere on this board, or bimmerfest A PS Thanks for the info in the 45k thing |
