Second, fitting 3 car seats is possible. If you do a search you'll find a few informative posts in here.

My personal opinion. I have 2 children, My son is three and daughter is two. Depending on the car seat you buy, you can't fit a third in the middle. I have two Britax Frontiers and there's no way a third could fit in the middle. See here (mine are black)

FRONTIER - Car Seats - Britax USA

Lastly, if you do get the X5 5.0 and you go for the third row option, you still can't fold the second row forward in order to access the third row with a large, good seat attached. Removing is on the run isn't an option.

Your option here is to pop the hatch, keep one seat down and then have whoever jump in and access the third row this way.

Then there's the issue of fitting all that gear somewhere.. Three kids in an X5 is not an easy task.. Good luck with your decision..
thanks, yeah i know about the non 3rd row in the M

we also have an MDX, so i know about the above!

Just my $0.02
bingo!

IGotIt, you still got your M3 bro? Wow, you are loyal. I always remembered your car on M3Forum. I've gone through many cars since my 05 M3 ZCP. It's time you pull the trigger brother, stop posting let's get some test drive going. People know my opinion on X5, I'd go for the big boys (Range Rover Sport Supercharged) or if you have the cash (Range Rover Supercharged) or (G55 AMG Used)

yeah, i'm having a hard time mentally getting ready to trade in my M3! while i'm a big fan of the RRS's styling, i'm skeptical of the build quality. not a mb fan at all either!

ShantF1 is an unknown quantity at this point
If your buying a new 50i get it with ad... My friend is absolutely enjoying the car with ad... Used x5 m.... A bit dangerous with reliability... That's why I bought a new X5 m. But the 50i is not to far performance wise ( with ad ).

X5M
- Beastly fast (M Power)
- More $$$ than any other X5

X5 5.0 M-option
- Beastly fast (not faster than X5M but seems faster than my E46M3, I do like to drive it more than the E46M3, I guess its an age thing)
- Less $$$ than X5M
- 3rd row option available (might hold the resale value???)
- flash it with Dinan and your closer to X5M power

Just a reminder,
- If youre getting a Entertainment/DVD package, opt for the headrest or get an aftermarket and DO NOT get the center console DVD/TV as it is very low (kids hated it as they easily get nausea watching compared to previous car) and it will bother your elbow
- if getting the X5 M-option, have the roof rails or tow hitch installed from factory if youre planning to haul more than the rear compartment. doing this later is a pain.

Personal opinion having driven it once in a while
- Overhead Display is amazing (keeps my speed below limit)
- Auto-H is a luxury
- Active seat/Massage chair is great for long travel (sorry driver only)
- I like the leather dash and hope it keeps up to the sun (forget the sunshade as it is very big and a hassle to place in the windshield)
- Engine/Exhaust pumps my adrenaline (everytime I drive the E46M3, i wish it could be as aggressively loud as the E70)
- Took all the options/packages we could get and cant say bad on any

Wife drive's it all the time and says its a great car. gets complimented all the time.

GL on whatever you decide. regardless, you still win coming from E46 to E70.
