My Options with my Current 2008 X5
Hi Guys, I've been having a bit of buyers remorse with the X5 3.0si. I love the car but I don't think it fits me/fast enough, not sure, still battling it inside. I realized I might be the youngest person on this forum that owns a X5 (25 single, not married, just gf's) by judging from that age and occupation thread. (Besides that 18 year old whose mom just bought him a X5M). I think I need a faster car.
The reason I got the X5 was because of winter conditions in NYC but I realized that it snows only like from Dec-Jan and I can always take out my old car which served me fine. Now, my options are either are: 1) Trade it in for a 2008 535xi, I hope I don't loose too much on the trade. - Another question is: I still owe about 13k on the SUV, did anyone ever trade in while still owe money on the vehicle? 2) Keep it while not happy driving it and finish paying it off and then get a CPO 2012 335i (Since I already got the X5 and I finish paying it off in 2015). 3) Trade in for a CPO 2008 4.8i hoping not to pay too much of the difference. Or any other recommendations? I'm hoping not to lose too much on it, If I have to loose more than 3k I would just keep it and use it on 20" rims and aerokit. It's a Silver CPO 2008 X5 3.0si with Tech, Prem., 4-zone-Rear Climate, Prem. sound and 42500 miles. Please don't bash me, I just need people's opinions and I value everyones comments. Thanks! |

Can you clarify this---you are upside down $13K on it or you have $13K to go before it's paid off ?

I am still confused you also said you won't be paying off the X5 until 2015 yet you only owe $13K on it ?
Well there are so many factors that go into a decision---the price you get on your trade, the price you get on the new one, how much are you willing to increase your payment on (or not) on the upgrade. An '08 3.0 with 48K miles probably trade-in is worth low $30Ks I am guessing. So, you net $17K on the trade. Unless you want your payments to be a certain amount by putting that into another car I would pocket the $17K when/if you trade. As far as the other options on which car, etc---do you really want to keep the X5 once it's paid off and buy another to drive as your daily driver ? You have to pay insurance on it etc and it's depreciating just sitting there. If you are wanting top $ on your car sell it on Autotrader, etc. On the topic of which cars, have you driven the 535xi, 335i or 4.8 to better assess what you like better ? BTW I was 28 when I bought my first X5 in '01 so you aren't that young to be on here ha.

If you have determined that you don't need AWD, why is a 535xi one of the options? Much better to look at the 535i and buy proper winter tires for it. It handles and performs better than the xi, gets better mileage, and is cheaper.
Drive the 3 series and 5 series and decide which you like. Determine what the net trade value will be on the X5 after paying off the loan, and decide then if you can afford it.

Same. I bought an 05 3.0i. Traded than in last December for my 4.8i. I am now 22. 4th BMW overall.
OP, as far as the financials of it..you just have to do some math. That's what it comes down to. As far as switching from the 3.0 to the 4.8? I did it and do NOT regret it. Even with 1/2 the MPG's I still love my truck. It's actually funny because I'm younger so I get looks and you know the people are thinking, "must be driving his parents' X5 around..." Nope! I actually had to convince my parents to get a BMW. They bought a 328xi loaded. I tried, so hard, to get them to buy a 335. No go. ![]() |

Honestly, it is what it is. We sacrifice MPG for power. When I look at my MPG I get sad so I drive "spirited" for a few minutes after and then become happy again. ![]() |

Thanks for the replies, guys. When I was about to purchase the X5, I test drove the 550i. I like the power of the 550i, but during the test drive it, it was snowing and the rear was fishtailing a little. It was a fully loaded 550i with M-sport, It did not have proper snow tires. I realized most of the NE have poor weather conditions during winter, so it might be a hassle to switch tires. I test drove a 535xi and it was better during the same snowy conditions.
I agree. It really depends how much I get for my X5 before I even do it. If I can ever get 33k, I doubt it but then I might consider it. It's better if I traded it in cause then I would pay tax on the difference. Thanks for your advice all! |
