Comfort access is very form and function yet you said that's just another thing to cause headaches... and well... an M5 has plenty more to break and cause headaches than a 528, but hey... you'll live with it. I went from a very jarring 2008 4.8i w 20s and sport suspension to a very supple 2012 50i with 20s and no sport suspension. The ride is simply not comparable. I am amazed its the same car.

I often thought the wheels were responsible for the rough ride of my previous X5 but as it turns out its just the suspension. You will be amazed how smooth it is even with the larger tires. Do not hesitate as it is exactly what you are looking for. Especially if you get non rft tires.

Is this is the same sport suspension that we are able to turn on and off with the sport button pre-LCI? That stiffens springs, etc. but I still can't tell a damn difference.

Yes sport button, both non-adaptive drive models. I don't believe OP has adaptive drive.

I imagine adaptive drive is the best but I found it impossible to test drive one and decided not to spring for the added cost. Had it on my old Range Rover and it was fantastic. Great cornering ability yet smooth.

Mine has the sport suspension but there is no button by the shifter to activate or deactivate it. I think diesels at lease in latin america don´t have that option to turn it on or off. I don´t know if the button modifies the suspension settings or just the engine response to throttle input. So, mine is harsh all the time!
