Absolute best oil for 2011 35d?

Just joined XOP and I love it! I p/u my 2011 X5 35d and it's awesome. I am a little neurotic about taking care of my "stuff" no matter what it is. I plan on doing an oil change around 1500 miles. There is sooo much info on oils on the web and this site. Can someone just tell me what they think is the best oil for my diesel? I live in the N east and fall is right around the corner. Thanks in advance. I'm sure I will be sucked into this site for hours again today!

congrats on getting you're new ride. I have placed an order for mine and, with luck I should have it by the end of the year. I think you will get alot of differing opinion on oil. One thing to keep in mind would be to always change the filter when you change the oil. I also always replace the "scrunch" washer on the oil pan drain plug when I do an oil change.

Is you're truck new? I mean you are the first owner? If so, I would use Dino oil for at least 5000 miles to allow the rings to seat (that's me and definitely there will be different opinions). After that point I would use the brand and viscosity the BMW calls for.

Enjoy you're truck. I was recently in the north east, my brother lives in Pennsylvania. It's has a very European feel to it driving around the countryside. I originally came from Colo and the scenery in the NE is very different.

Thanks for your repy! Yes, I'm the first owner it had 12 miles on it. You are going to love it. So, you think I should wait until about 5k for the first one? Being in the NE we go from 100* to 0*. that being said I would think the weights would change during the year.

I won't wait 5000 to do my first oil change. I plan to change mine after around 1900-2400 Km / 1200-1500 Mi. My thinking would be to make sure any miscellaneous crap from production that is caught by the filter is removed from the engine. I will then change my oil again at 8000 Km / 5000 Mi this time using synthetic. After that I will change my oil at 12000 Km / 7500 Mi intervals.

Again this is just what I plan to do, others will have differing opinions.

Sounds like a plan to me. I'm sure the dealership is starting out with synthetic in it now? What color and options did you get?

IMO, the "very best" oil for an X5 diesel under warranty is the ONE oil BMW requires:

Castrol SLX OE Professional 5-30

Coming from a Ford background as far as ownership of Mustangs, stang owners love to reinvent the wheel and self engineer their motor and transmissions' needs by going against factory recommendations and changing weights and types. Never understood. I use Amsoil because I am always busy to change the oil in my car and need the extended drain intervals. However, there is no way I would go against the factory on the X5, why would u?

I would never use a non-synthetic oil for break in unless the engine manufacturing processes required it. An example would be the older M models. Mineral oil was used for break-in there because of the cylinder wall finish. The whole BMW 1200 mile break in period recommendation, which is still driving some owners to change perfectly good oil in, was based on that premise. Current manufacturing techniques have no requirement for mineral oil for break in. Your engine is already being broken in on a full synthetic, as it should be.

Use the best oil you can, and at the moment, that is a full synthetic. See ard's recommendation. Look for the API symbol, and if it is a diesel, the LL-04 designation. Don't use LL-04 if it isn't a diesel. Since you are in the warranty period, it is advisable to only use an oil that is specified by BMW, no reason to create drama with them if you ever do have an engine problem (not that oil is likely to cause one, but why create issues?).

No requirement to change motor oil viscosity during the year in the NE. You can get a multi-grade that will cover all of your ambient temperature conditions.

If there is any miscellaneous crap in the filter after BMW cleans out the engine after assembly, then it isn't like you need to change the oil to take it out. It is supposed to be in the filter, that is what the filter does. If you want to, just change the filter. If you want to change the oil, fine, no problem, but it would be for the pleasure of doing it, not for any benefit to the engine.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll just take a look at the filter. I found the manual and if it drives me nuts I'll use the castrol like the manual says. That's y this is a great forum!! Thanks again!
