IMO
this can happen to anyone's kids as they're playing in the neighborhood. So many kids on my block, I have to double check my rear sides, PLUS, DO RELY on the PDC cam/tone for my rear blindspot because let's face it, you can't see short-stacks directly behind you in this vehicle. I know where my kids are (either in the car with me or inside)... but without PDC, never sure if there's absolutely nobody else behind me.

Convenience + re-assurance. Use only the cam for backing up? Of course not, but it's still very important in this vehicle.

I agree, people need to rely on their own 'extras' (eyes, ears, knowledge of their kids exact location) before they rely on the car's extras.

Having said that, that woman is going to be going through something 99.9 % of humans will never experience and is possibly the worst thing imaginable - taking your own child's life. Her life is essentially ruined now and I doubt she is thinking "damn BMW for not fitting r.c's as standard".

I had a close call at the grocery store once. Loaded my stuff in the trunk and was starting to back up. I saw a woman over my right shoulder 10-20 feet away running towards the back of my X5.

I stopped and a few seconds later saw her grab her little munchkin that had run behind my car. Very scary incident for both of us.

I was very fortunate that my own little munchkin never ventured more than 2 feet away from my side when out in public. It must be quite a trial for parents with more adventurous kids.

+3 to ard's comment.
The cams and beepers give you 'some info', but they ain't near foolproof.
That and the MB ads with some bigshot saying his car basically 'saw the danger' and it braked to a stop, all by itself. I am digging for the link where some group of engineers tested all the new avoidance programs in the higher line cars, and the results were not close to the mkting bs.

Driving a freakin car still requires some serious attention and skill; none of which include watching TV, texting, net surfing, etc.

That why BMW makes us press the annoying "Accept" every time we start the car..the cam helps but can't do what a human can do.

I have no kids of my own but there are plenty in my neighborhood, so I know to take it easy and watch out for them. This evening I had 2 near incidents. Pulling into the neighborhood at the first stop sign was a car just sitting there. No turn signal or flashers and 15-20 seconds later a kid gets out the right side rear door. He slowly walks forward and then back again and opens the side door. By then I had sat for nearly a minute. I start to pull around. The kid closes the door I caught that out of the corner of my eye just as I start to go around), runs around the front of the car and crosses the street right in front of me without looking. Fortunately I was still going slow and stopped...

One block later I was approaching several cars parked on the right side of the street and a kid on a bike on the sidewalk approaching the cars. He just shot out a driveway in between the cars as I get right there. I swerved left to miss him (fortunately no on coming cars).

Parents need to teach their kids better safety habits.....

Even with PDC and video you cannot be sure...which is precisely my point.
