CEL came on this week...

Hi all,
Have a 2010 35d with a hair over 30k on the odometer and the check engine light came on Monday. Have an appointment scheduled on Thursday to take it in. Removed the gas cap and re-tightened it, but the light is still on.

Have been reading all the CEL issue posts on here and on other boards. Hope this isn't the start of a recurring issue... But appreciate all the info about tracking the codes, mileage and work done for future use... Guess I'll know more Thursday. I'll post the error code Thursday or Friday when I know what it is.

Love this car... Just took it from TN to Destin, Fl and got 26mpg loaded with 3 adults, 2 kids and luggage. Drove down there and drove around for three days on one tank of gas.

I'll keep everyone posted.

Same issue last month at 25,000 miles on my 2010. My OBD reader indicated a generic issue on air intake.......I suspected a sensor.....they couldn't find anything on first two visits.....cleared the codes, then would come back on within 5 miles from shop.
On the thrd visit, they replaced in charge air cooler......light still came on.......then they replaced a sensor and all is well.......

Wife said light went off today. Keeping the appt though so I can get the code documented. Also just put new shoes on and am having the alignment checked.

I'm going to thread jack my own thread for a second... Put Conti ExtremeContact DWS in stock size on, and though it's still early, my first impressions of this tire are VERY positive. Ample sidewall strength to provide sharp turn in (a bit more muted than the Michelin RFTs that came with it, but still sporting enough), and the ride is soooooo much better. Road noise is non-existent, too. If they wear as well as they are supposed to, I'll be one happy camper.

Diesel Guy, do you remember what code yours threw?

Thanks,
Boyce

1. You actually don't have a 'gas cap'.

2. Post the codes. Make sure they READ and report the code and not just clear it then look.

3. Minimize TOE on the alignment..don't just go with something within the "BMW specs".

1. Really? Pretty nitpicky, Ard, even for you.
2. Good point. They will get very specific instructions to print and provide a copy of the OBD results.
3. I always have them set the toe as close to 0,00 as possible, within spec. I believe this is 0,02'. They will not set it out of spec, but 0,02' is sufficient to eliminate outside edge wear, unless camber starts to drift toward the + side.

I can't remember the code....maybe P07.....it was off of an inexpensive OBD reader that doesn't give the details that the dealership would see.....

Ard's correct........ You manned up and bought a diesel.......stop worrying about 'gas mileage' or 'gas caps'.....time to fuel up boys!

Update...

Picked up the X5 today. The following fault codes were stored, non of which would trip the CEL according to their computer:
- 46F2: DeNOx system, function: trouble code P204F, 1 instance at 48976km
- 4BC3: Exhaust-gas temperature controller, plausibility: trouble code P244C, 1 instance at 46664km
- 474D: Intercooler, plausibility: trouble code P026A, 2 instances at 49802km and 49872km

They said there was no code stored that would have tripped the CEL, but I suspect it was deleted or they just didn't give it to me.

CEL went off Wednesday after being on for two days, and hasn't come back on. They did perform a reprogramming under SIB 18 02 10.

Anyone have any insight on the codes above?

474D: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...esolution.html

I am going to opine that they are lying or incompetent. I suspect ALL of those are CELs... (The CEL cannot come on without a code to cause it! For an SA to lie to you with a straight face is troubling...)

If you search my posts, you will find that I had multiple issues with my 2010 diesel around ALL the areas your codes seem to touch. After 60 days in the shop, I lemoned it and have a 2012 diesel.

HOWEVER, I do believe the root cause was poor software design and validation by BMW...as a result I suspect that they have been pushing out new software to cars to better trap 'real' errors and reject spurious crap.... my issue was that they'd keep testing/failing/replacing parts/failing...

Give it a shot, I think it will be stable moving forward....
